I currently have a NP7280 that was a joy when I did an extensive amount of gaming, CAD, and other hardware intensive tasks. Now the bulk of the systems power goes unused.

The NP9170 has caught my eye for a variety of reasons, but before I go configuring it and trying to sell the 7280, I want to see what I can get away with by moving GPUs around.

    • Can I swap a 580M from the 7280 and the 670M from the NP9170? The 9170 comes standard with the 670, but I believe the 580M still trumps it. As I have access to a couple of 580Ms, I am wondering if I could use one of them in the NP9170 instead. What I was not sure about was a difference in heatsink design, thermal capabilities, and issues with the battery/PSU having enough power.

    Thanks!

I would make the assumption that you can, there is nothing stopping you as long as Sager's bios supports it. The 580 is 100 Watts I think, but the 7970m is 100 watts too and they don't change the power supply between it and the 670m. Power wise you should be fine. Thermally you should be fine as the 7970m and the 680 seem to run quite warm.

As for the heat sinks.. I have no idea at all. I don't know what the ones in the 7280 look like. Get some pics of them and I can tell you if it is close or not, I have a 9170 I don't mind messin' with to help you. The Heat sink on the cards in the 9170 is a two piece design, one piece over the vram and the other over the core. Seven total screws between them.

Check out RJTech.com. They will sell you one without the GPU at all if you're just planning on a swap. The bare bones is only 784 without GPU if I recall correctly (you have to go to the bare bones listing and choose "No GPU" to see the price). You can carry over your CPU, RAM, HD, etc. yourself since that sounds kind of like what you are wanting to do.

This is incredible...I think it (at least in my config) is a bit more than $784, but is undoubtedly cheaper than all the part swapping would have cost otherwise.

    Thanks!
