I preordered this laptop with the i7-2630QM and 4gb (2x2) of RAM. I would of liked to purchase 8gb of RAM, but that would of made the laptop over my wife's imposed budget. I figure I can get around her budget by buying additional RAM from newegg or amazon :D

My question is what configuration of RAM would I be best off with since I have 2 open slots? Should I buy 4gb of ram (2x2) and fill all 4 slots? Would their be any advantage to only filling 2 of the slots with a 4x2 configuration and junking the ram that came with my laptop? Or should I call back my vendor and just get it upgraded to 8gb?

My other question is if I were to buy 4x2 of ram and use the ram that came with my laptop for 12gb total would that cause any performance issues since I would be using different sizes?

I'm thinking of buying 2x2 and filling all 4 slots unless you guys suggest otherwise. Sorry if this is hard to read, not sure how to make it any easier with all the numbers needed for Ram configurations. Thank for your help!

Buy 4x4gb and fill all the slots.

But really, 2x2gb to make it 8gb is good enough.

Cool thanks. PC3 10600 is the standard correct? I see 10666 and some others listed as being ddr3.

I agree, buy a 2x4GB kit now and just swap it in. Then you can add more down the road if you choose.

I'm stuck with the 2x2 I bought with my laptop unfortunately...So I guess my real question should of been between these two options. Thanks for the replies.

    1) Buy 2x4 and bring my total to 12gb, but use mismatched ram sizes. Might this cause problems since they are different sizes?

    2) buy 2x2 and bring my total up to 8gb

Hey, either way you should be good, I would just do whats best for your budget, long as its all DDR3-1333 you will be good :)

Sorry to jump in but I didn't realize you could have different sized sticks as long as the spped matched.

You can have different sized sticks no problem. Just try to keep the speed (DDR3 1333MHz) and timings the same and you should have no issues.

Understand the other two slots are under the keyboard, and may require some work to access.

Once the service manual comes out, we'll know for sure.

Didn't think about that possibility, I figured all 4 slots would be exposed. I'm assuming they would install the RAM that I purchase with the laptop in the slots under they keyboard though right?
