My current laptop is a Sager NP8170, i7-2720QM, 485m, and a 90% NTSC color Gamut screen. I'd like to get a new laptop, but I can't really justify the cost unless I sell my old one. I'm debating between trying to sell my old one as a whole unit or parting it out. I get the impression that I can more cash out of it by parting it out, but as I've never done it before, I'm not sure if the extra cash is worth the effort. Obviously it's really difficult to pinpoint specific numbers here.

    1. How much is a reasonable ballpark from my laptop whole?

    2. How much could I potentially squeeze out of it if I parted it out? I realize there is a ton of wiggle room here, and it all depends on the buyers.

    3. What parts make the most sense to split up vs keep together? I've seen people selling the bigger parts (screen, mobo) on ebay before, but I've also seen people selling the smaller items such as the drive caddies and heatsinks.

    Any other advice?

P.S. The 485m still surprises me sometimes. Sure it cant run the new hotness on Ultra, but it can still run many games on medium. I'm looking at a NP8652 as a replacement, which looks like it will give my desktop a run for it's money.

    part out FTW :)

i sold my P150HM several months ago and got 1000€ total for all the parts. granted, it was a higher specced machine (2960XM, 7970M, 7260ac wifi), but the principle remains the same.

my individually sold parts were: CPU / GPU (old defective and new with warranty) / wifi adapter / ODD caddy / keyboard (new) / HDD / shell with old keyboard, heatsinks, display, mobo, optical drive, etc.

as for pricing, hard to tell.... could be around 750€ if you do your due diligence with your ebay auctions and follow a few basic rules :)

edit: apart from that, i must say i would never have sold my beloved P150HM, had it not been for so many defects that it wasnt worth the hassle anymore... i absolutely loved that machine! and maxxed out on CPU / GPU it was on an even level with a machine specced at 4700MQ and between 780M & 880M stock performance :)
