So is there any future hope to getting a non-glossy option on these machines?
I am looking for a 18" replacement for my Acer 8943g, but I really don't like the glossy screen I currently have.

Is my only choice to go with a 17" machine instead?

I think the main reason there aren't any 18.4" matte screens on the market right now is simply demand...There's not enough of it :(

However, AUO or LG will probably start making screens once it gets popular.

Ok, well put me down for one Matte please.

As it stands, I may end up ordering a 17" instead....but I want the power of the 18" Crossfire.

How glossy is the glossy? Just as glossy as anything else?

If I order the 8180 from Xotic and just can't deal with the gloss, could it be returned or exchanged for the lesser model with a matte?

Why not get a matte screen filter?

    That is certainly an option.
I didn't know they made them for 18" screens. I will have to look into that.
Wouldn't one distort the brightness/image/colors at all?

It is quite glossy. If I turn on full lighting in my room it is no fun to look at the screen. This doesn't bother me personally since I always turn on semi-indirect lighting when working on the notebook. And in this case the screen is wonderful - I simply love it
