what are the differences between these? I'm having a hard time deciding... Does one have a more rugged or better fit and finish build quality? Is the hardware exactly the same between the two?

I can build out one of these systems with the GTX 870M, i7-4810MQ Processor, base level HDD and memory plus a gloss 90% NTSC screen about 1400 shipped... are there any other brands making a 17" with the same specs or better for the price?

It's pretty much just outward appearance. They are the same otherwise.

Appearance with things like LEDs. It's one of the better 17 inch machines out there. Dual card options are in the 93xx series if you want more power.

I imagine the aluminum skinned 170 has a tougher case feel? I am not interested in LED's but having a backlit keyboard will be nice for dark room use.

They both have backlit keyboards as standard. The P177SM-A has a backlit design on the touchpad as well.

That is important actually, soft rubber finish (warm but can wear over time depending on use and hands) or aluminium which is cooler to the touch but harder wearing.

A lot of people do. The two are nearly identical, they differ mainly only in aesthetics. :) Hopefully you enjoy it!
