Hi guys, total noob question. I was looking at the newer models based on the NP8651/8652 and had one question. I read WingNut's review of these models and it stated that one of the M.2 ports was PCIe X4 and the other SATA III. Is it possible to have both a PCIe X4 boot drive and a SATA III caching SSD installed? Some people were mentioning that using the PCIe X4 port will nullify the SATA III one... Did I misunderstand?

    Thanks all.

If you have the PCIe m.2 in there, then it will use the full x4 speeds. But if you have the other m.2 in the second slot, then it isn't able to go at the full x4 speeds, and basically goes at the x2 speed then. So having that other drive in there would reduce it to about the speeds of a regular Sata m.2 speed basically. But what ever you have in the 2.5 inch bay will not affect the speeds of the PCIe m.2, only the second slot.

You can have a M.2 PCIe x4 lanes SSD in one slot and a M.2 SATA SSD in the other slot, without compromise.
This is for the P65xSG(NP8652). The P65xSE (NP8651) configuration is the same.

But as pat@XOTICPC mentioned, doing that voids the X4 speeds of the PCIe SSD, correct? Not sure I want to sacrifice that...

Straight off of Sager's site for the 8657:

(Factory Option) Two M.2 2280 SSD (RAID 0/1 support), SATA interface or One M.2 2280 SSD, PCIe Gen3 x4 interface

    I see, thanks pat.

How would the speed of two SATA SSDs in RAID 0 compare to one PCIe x4 SSD? There doesn't seem to be many comparison articles online...

    performance of the SM951:

    • Sequential Read: 2,150MB/s, 2,150MB/s, 2,050MB/s
    • Sequential Write: 1,500 MB/s, 1,200 MB/s, 600MB/s

    Performance of the 850 evo:

    • Sequential Read: Max. 540 MB/s
    • Sequential Write: Max. 500 MB/s

Even in raid 0 with 2, the single PCIe would be faster.

HTwingnut also has a good review posted on here- http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...l-impressions-and-review-by-htwingnut.767349/

Then I guess it comes down to finances. My ideal setup would be a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD and two 1TB Samsung 850 EVOs but that's almost $1000. My plan B solution is two Samsung 850 EVO M.2s with a cached Seagate 2TB hard drive, which falls under $300...

Thank you everyone for the clarifications.

I don't know if the new laptops support NVMe SSDs like the 950 Pro yet. Unless someone here can confirm it...

    No, not correct.
Again, this time from the Sager site for the NP8657 under Specifications.
The 2nd slot can take a M.2 SATA SSD or M.2 PCIe SSD. It has a SATA and PCIe interface.
The 3rd slot can only take a M.2 SATA SSD It connects through the SATA interface only. no PCIe lanes.
A SATA SSD does not use PCIe lanes. So, it can't take away any from a PCIe SSD. This model can take one M.2 PCIe x4 lanes SSD and one M.2 SATA SSD.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2
The keying of the M.2 module determines the socket it can connect to.
The M key is PCIe x4 and SATA.
The B key is PCIe x2 and SATA
A M.2 PCIe SSD will be M keyed. (The 950 Pro image.) A M.2 SATA SSD will, likely, be B & M keyed to fit either a B or M keyed socket. (The 850 EVO image)

Is supported. Is the same as sm951, but for RAID you need special drivers. But anyway, everything work fine :) over 3GB/s
