Been awhile since my last post, but here goes.
I picked up the NP 8658 with the 6700HQ and the Nvidia 980m.
I ran prime when I first got it and the highest the CPU got was 70 degrees
I ran 3DMark D11 and the highest the GPU got was 68
I am now playing Black Desert Online and temps are getting pretty high while playing.
HW Monitor is reporting the following:
CPU Temps
Core 0: 79
Core 1: 83
Core 2: 77
Core 3: 80
GPU Temp: 73
It's been awhile since I took it apart so I did that today and everything looks pretty clean, I didnt take apart the heatsinks to re-tim as I thought that would be a big undertaking.. I never toughed it, so it's still factory TIM.
I play with it on my lap or balancing on one leg.. which I know is a bad idea.. Just worried about the temps it hits.. Any recommendations??

Intake vents are on the bottom of the laptop. If it isn't on a flat, hard surface then the likelihood of the intake vents being blocked is pretty high.

That is great to hear. I thought the spikes to 83 was a bit too much..
Should I look into undervolting the CPU to keep the temps down? Or simply lower the settings of the game -

Undervolting the CPU can give some nice gains while maintaining performance, just make sure you are not working on any important data while testing and not sure of stability.

hey meaker, can you send me a link on how to undervolt?
I've never done it before.. my experience is limited to overclocking and its been forever. -

Drop the adaptive voltage in XTU and test using a variety of applications you use. Once you hit instability add 20-30mv back on and test for another while.

I wouldn't suggest XTU, I have been seeing more and more posts pop up about people having issues with XTU these days - even more and newer issues than before. I would suggest something like ThrottleStop.
