The survey has typos and the temperatures aren't specific (I assume it's just for HD temps, but it would be nice to separate it into HD/GPU/CPU/ACPI maybe). The hard drive info doesn't differentiate between sataI and sataII drives either.

    thanks for the reply Tarentum
i did post asking for any input/questions people would like to have added but i got no replys.
so what would you like changed or added before we get any more replys.

the main issue seems to be about hard drive temperatures at the moment so that is why i tried to keep the questions to a minimum.
at a later stage i will do a full survey (like i did for the m15x in the link below)

Doesn't the M860TU only support SATA-II or is it backwards compatible with SATA-I?

Sorry, I just checked the thread :) I didn't see where you asked for suggestions on what to put in a survey (way too many threads about this - in the official thread?)

M860TUs come with SATAI or SATAII hard drive options from all resellers (only ~3 options for the slower speed though, the default config has a 160GB SATAI drive). I would put in a HDD/CPU/GPU temp line (instead of just one temperature listing) and what type of drive it is (sataI/II) next to the line asking what brand & speed the hard drives are. It would be handy info :) There's *got* to be something consistent among people having heat problems.

I haven't seen anyone with a 160GB/250GB SATAI drive post stats, actually (unless the systems that Justin etc tested were default configs, in which case it would be SATAI). I had a feeling that SATAII drives might run hotter, so ordered mine (before any of the HD heat issues cropped up) with a SATAI drive, to avoid trauma from dead hard drives.

I just realized that it's pretty easy to tell if someone's drive is SATAI/II from the size they ordered and the options that Sager offers; only one drive (320GB) is available in multiple formats, and they're both SATAII. It's still not bad to have it on the quiz for easier browsing :) There are two SATAI drives available from most (all?) resellers that I've checked:

    160GB 5400rpm
    250GB 5400rpm

I would assume that they'd be the cooler running ones, if it at all related to the hard drives themselves.

Holy Milky-Way Batman! That survey scares the crap out of me!
Hard drives temperatures of 65° under load? That's just crazy.

And thank you for this survey, MrDJ, I'm sure it'll prove very helpful :)

i added these extra questions yesterday:
    5. SATA I or SATA II
    13. HIGHEST TEMP. REACHED
    16. POWER BRICK MAKE AND MODEL NUMBER
    17. HAS YOUR POWER BRICK GOT A FAN
    20. HAVE YOU OR ARE YOU THINKING OF RETURNING YOUR LAPTOP FOR ANY OTHER REASON.

i will also add the CPU Temp & GPU Temp for you.

    ^^^Tankbuster
no problem mate. hopefully once we get quite a lot of replies in i can then draw up some graphs and we will all get a better idea on what could be causing the problem.

Cool, thanks! They seemed to be useful data points, especially if it's an issue with the cooling system in general :)

Guys, I've been trying to see if anyone else has any loading ..difficulties on their M860TU but no one seems to have the same hard drive that I have. The harddrive loads things (XP/games/apps) unbelievably slow. In-game frames (quick test on CoD4, optimal settings then raised to native res) showed a steady 70~90 FPS while the menu loading, level loading both were extremely choppy.

Heatwise, the part to the right of the touchpad is the warmest of the entire laptop but it NEVER gets uncomfortably warm, probably due to the cooler and "low end" HDD.

Oh and I'm running XP, have it config'd with a P8400 and 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3. I've reformatted my desktop with XP only a couple months ago with components that were the lower end of fast 2 years ago. The loading on that completely blows the time this laptop struggles to make, which I can only assume from the slower drive. (5400 vs 7200) =/

Oh and the XP was a clean install done by myself, the harddrive had FAT32 formatting so I did a quick format to NTFS. I haven't finished defragging after installing some stuff so I'll try to see if that helps at all. I installed the drivers in the order that disc wanted, but it got a little annoying because XP takes more than 35 bars to load just into the login screen. <-- At that screen when the loading-into-the-desktop music plays, it stutters and is pretty slow and choppy, though the past couple of days have been slightly better.

I probably won't send the laptop in for anything special, with the harddrive I might just upgrade it myself. Also, would like to apologize if I hijack part of the thread for this post, but it's not something I think needs too much attention/own thread.

ps. I haven't had a day off from work since I got the M860TU, will game on it labor day to find out about the temps.

Do you have XP's hotfix for multi-cores installed? And is it 64 or 32 bit? You also haven't given info on the hard drive's specs.

35 bars is just too long and anormal. There's a problem going on.

And yeah, can we get your specs?

XP hotfix K896596 installed, registry edited, boot.ini edited. I am running XP Pro 32-bit. Hard drive specs are in the mini forum survey.. but it's a 160GB 540rpm Fujitsu MHZ2160BH G1. It should be a SATA I w/ a 8mb cache.

Yeah I know 35 bars is too much, I'm trying to narrow it down to hard drive, drivers, or just something outside of that. I left it it idle overnight with my windows open (I live in central NJ) and now I've seen idle HDD temps of 39C; that and no weird sound comes from the laptop (unlike Adam's) so I've almost completely ruled out a faulty drive. Thanks for your replies!

Um, it takes ~35 bars to load even when you just installed Windows? How much time was the installation? It should be around 35 minutes for Windows XP. You might try to reinstall it again just to be sure but I don't see what's the problem if all your drivers are ok and there's no problem with the hardware.

Hm, well 64-bit would run faster (not sure how much), and that's a slowish hard drive but it shouldn't be THAT slow. If it's a clean install and nothing's running in the background (disabled every background app?) and you don't have a virus, the hard drive would not be running correctly/might be faulty. You should repost your post in the main M860TU thread and see what everyone else suggests :)

Thanks again guys, sorry for the scare, I did a regular (not quick) format on the hard drive again and now it boots within 4.5 bars into XP.

This laptop is pretty much everything I wanted including performance, heat, and slight portability. Temps have been edited in the survey after about 2 hours of HL2:Episode 1 on native res 2xAA/2xAF. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the purchase, and I'm glad I chose the basic config for the cool(er) hard drive ;)

Wow, I wonder what went wrong with the first install. Very whacky. Glad it's fixed and not hardware related. I can't wait for mine ;)

I would love to see an additional question asking about the low whining noise near the right control key.

    Hi l4d
ive been quoating people for the last 6 months that 65c is the danger level but now people are talking about 60c is max
back in august it was quoated by a OEM retailer from america that not to worry as long as its under 65c but i cant find the post.
the average ive seen lately is 51c-55c which i think is spot on for this beast.
i do hit 61-62c while defragging or while virus scan is in progress as the clevo brain thinks its not doing much so doesnt increase the fan speed.
as long as your not running at 60+ continuously then i think you should be fine.

The clevo 'brain' as you put it is linked only to the temperature of the cpu and gpu, so nothing that the hdd is doing will ever make the fan spin up

the reason i put it like that was just an example to show that intensive programs running in the background dont kick the fan to speed up.
so in other words theres nothing we can do to keep the temps. down while defragging ore doing a full virus scan.

Protip: during a virus scan, I like to run Orthos or Furmark to get the fans running.

Hei you got a great survey going on there. Will be great to see the results. But i am really curious abt that low constant irritating and annoying whining nosie.

Is every one else ignoring it or is there a way to get rid of that stupid noise??
Would be great to get a solution to that noise. If you think that starting a new thread would help solve the problem then pls help me out.

BTW i am almost to the conclusin that the new intel matrix sotrage driver v8.8 is the solution to the hdd heat issue

Huh! But i tried them already. They just say turn on bluetooth which doesnt work for me.

So any other suggestions. Sorry but i wont be posting any other replies on this issue in this thread. Excuse me just once
