I posted in this forum a while back and have had no success in troubleshooting my issue with my computer. Basically, my laptop turns on and the left half of the screen is completely white and the right half is completely black. I tried using an external monitor with no success which leads me to believe it's my video card. Any other ideas?
Anybody have any guides on how to replace the video card or which video card I can upgrade too?
Thanks,
Mark

Sounds like you're right, and that your video card has kicked the bucket. Another use had a very similar issue lately and the thread should answer your question on replacement cards:

what video card did you have. was it the 9800GT and if so welcome to the club. over the last 2 years theres must be about 100 of us on the forum alone.
luckily mine died in march and i had taken out the extended warranty so i got a 260gtx which is a faster card replaced.
for a temporary fix you could always forum search the baking method.
if possible could you post a picture of your screen as ive not seen totally black and white before. its normally lines down the screen.
i will try and hunt my picture down.Attached Files:

Here's a picture of what my computer screen looks like. Does this look like a dead video card?
I've gone ahead and disassembled my laptop all the way down to the video card. I'm tempted to try the baking method, any good tutorials?
Also, it seems like everything on ebay is overpriced. Anybody know of a good spot to get a cheap video card replacement of similar specs or better to the 9800m gt.
Thanks,

Judging on your screen and the fact that your output to an external monitor doesn't work, I can't think of anything else.
I don't know if it will work for you, but this thread has info on baking.

It's always worth a shot, though it's at best temporary.

My vote is on a bad card as well, especially since it's a 3-year old 9800M GT. Speaking from experience, if you bake it you will probably get it back for a while. However, you are just delaying the inevitable. The fourth time I baked mine it didn't come back, and then I really needed a new video card, like, now.
EDIT - That HD4870 that niffcreature linked to in the other thread wouldn't be a bad deal, especially considering it's a brand new part. -
So I pre-heated my oven to 385 and put my video card elevated on some foil for 8 minutes. 20 minutes later of applying thermal paste and re-assembling my laptop it is ALIVE!!!!!!!! Haha it's crazy to think that I just baked my video card back to life.
Now my only question is for those who've had success with this method. How long will my video card survive? Should I look for a replacement now that way when it goes for good I can just swap it in? -

Get something going, because it will probably only last a few weeks before you have to do it again. It gets annoying, and eventually not even your Electrolux will be able to save it. According to a seemingly qualified poster in the hardware section, each time you bake it, you damage the traces on the board. After a few rounds in the oven you probably won't be able to revive it anymore.
I upgraded to a FX3700M and I'm pretty happy with it. If I were you I'd write a post in the want to buy section of the marketplace here on NBR, and maybe think about giving this a look:
ASUS W90 HD4870 1GB DDR3 MXM III VGA Card [W90] - $224.99- laptop-ac-adapter.org
No guarantees on that one working, but I know at least one poster who is active on this board has it working in a M860TU. It's the fastest option for our notebooks. -
told you it was worth a try.
its varied on reprieve times for users. some are weeks some are months.
all its doing is sofening the solder enough for it to reconect the faulty cracked solder connection. -
Last I checked (correct me if I'm wrong), niff doesn't have the 4870 working with the internal display. For me, that's a pretty big reason to not add it to my list, especially when it isn't not far and away faster than the available Nvidia options.

Last time I checked, the 4850 I tested from the MSI gt725 does not work on any built in displays but the gt725/gx720 because they are not standard MXM.
As I stated in that thread at the time, I was 99% sure it was an issue with the MSI specific card, and now it is 100% confirmed.
The internal display functionality has nothing to do with Clevo or ATI.
The Asus cards work perfectly in other laptops.
Sorry but apparently its taken me way to long to correct ridiculous posts like this:
