While playing CoD4 on my laptop I routinely drop from 125 fps (what I cap it at) down to <20 fps for a split second and it then returns back to the normal 125 fps. I'm using the Logitech Alto usb hub with my mouse/keyboard plugged into it and I'm also using an external monitor. I'm also using Kaspersky AV. I've tried playing with Kaspersky off, as well as multiple graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go as well as the drivers off of the driver CD.
I've also tried playing on Vista 32 bit and the problem is still there. Is there any "check" that is occurring within Vista that is causing my FPS to spike down for a split second? Is it due to using an external monitor? Any help is greatly appreciated!
I'm going to try tonight using just a mouse plugged into my laptop and no external monitor and see if the problem still exists.

PS: I'm also shipping it in on Tuesday for a new LCD screen (came with a blob of dead pixels)

disable the resource hogs in the background:
- Anti-virus ... which is not needed while gaming.
- System Restore
- Auto defrag (default on in Vista)
- Drive Indexing service.
... etc.. -
Still occurseven with just a mouse hooked up to the laptop (no ext monitor). As well as everything you suggested and a vista tweak guide found on these forums.

have you tried playing another game?
get the Crysis or UT3 demo and see if it still occurs.
