Holy cow, I was about to order an alienware m15x and I gave people hell about trying to advise me otherwise.... Boy do I feel like an idiot now. This this looks amazing as well as offering better performance for LESS MONEY. I want to email AW and ask them when the heck they are going to realease a new version of the M15X with the new platform.

Good question. I'd like to know the answer to this too. (And whether Photoshop CS3 and Vampire: Bloodlines will work on a 64-bit OS).

On the np8660(m860tu), are they utilizing the ability in the monteneva to use the on die gpu vs the discreet gpu?

is this due to there being no integrated gpu? or is it something that could be changed with a bios update?

My guess is that there's no integrated gpu which is a pitty, it was one of the nicest things to be introduced in a laptop (especially along with the linux on a chip thing that gives you fast access to email/browsing).

We have been over this discrete/integrated gpu switching many times...It requires an nvidia chipset with integrated gpu and an nvidia discrete gpu, so no clevo can use it as they use intel chipsets

I thought the m15 has it with an intel... but then again is not the same platform but still would prove there's a way around that.

It is a feature built into some of the new chipsets in the Montevina chipset, I dug a bit deeper, The NP8660/M860TU uses the PM45 Chipset which only supports discreet graphics, while the GM series has both an integrated gpu and can support a discreet gpu. It is supposed to be able switch between the 2 but i have not found any actual data beyond the statement that It can do it.

They are correct in stating that the NP8660/M860TU will not support this.

Kind of a bummer though as this is a really nice feature. I wonder why this was not included. I would guess that it is not fully implemented yet.

Yes but it also brings your life on battery to 6 hours or somewhere around that. Ok smart bay battery and dimmed screen, browsing only etc etc but still it adds portability to a beast.
What I meant is that if AW could do a work-around custom design to get it in Clevo could have done it even easier on the new platform (either using nvidia integrated or some trick and a intel). Is the only thing that is missing from this awesome computer (well SmartBay would have made a nice addition too).

It is? Why is this a nice feature? When would you ever need to use onboard graphics if you had a separate 3D graphics card (which is better)? Having integrated graphics on the PM45 motherboards would just raise the price, possibly cause conflicts, and take up room on the motherboard that could be used for other things. In a notebook, all of the above are significant issues. The only benefit that I can see is if you're worried about a GPU failure and would like to have a graphics card to fall back on?

Photoshop CS3 works beautifully on 64bit Vista and CS4 is said to be even better on such an operating system. Furthermore, your graphics card will come in handy...very much in handy in it. :)

Mainly for when your using the battery and not plugged in, the integrated has much less power consumption then the discreet. Being able to watch a movie or 2 with a spare battery is very nice on a long flight.

Everyone's going the switchable graphics route these days, from recent reviews on the NBR homepage. Lenovo and Sony seem to stick in my mind, and I think the cards in those laptops are barely mid-range. The difference we'd get for a 9800 GT(S) would be even better.

So I notice that this computer is now only available with the 9800gts... Why is that? Was there a problem with the GT?

As has been said before, the 9800GT has been taken out of production by Nvidia and so no one can buy it any more.

Quick query - lot's of talk about HD temps and all, but I notice that when running 3dmark or playing crysis for some time, my GPU (9800 GT) temp can peak out around 90-95C (according to HWMonitor 1.08).

Is this cause for concern? I am not actively cooling the laptop, it's just sitting on a desk.

    Thanks,

    Petrov.

    Hi there Petrov.
It will run hot... So it's not a big deal. But just for the sake of it, download Rivatuner and check what is going on (it's better to follow GPU clocks and temperatures).
Then, run Furmark for a good hour or so. With Furmark my GPU reaches 88ºC. With Crysis, around 84-86ºC.

So maybe your GPU is running sligthly hotter than what it should. Make sure you don't block the vent and you give it enough space in the back. Also upgrade to the latest GPU drivers from L2VGO.

    Good luck

    I'll give that a shot and revert. I'm running 177.98 from lv2go...

Use the drivers from Dox. I would recommend the 177.92.
Those worked great and gave good performance.

ArcticSilver - the heat paste? I am not going to take off my GPU heatsink and apply it... :) I am not overclocking, so there's no reason I should need to take these sorts of steps, imho.

Unlikely. The quads do not currently work with the m570tu due to incompatibilities, so I would doubt if they would work in the m860tu

I haven't run either of those, which really stress the system so that doesn't seem to be an unusually high temp overall but are on the high side for this specific notebook. I usually reach mid-high 60s playing games (Oblivion, Mass Effect, Witcher). Short of getting a cooling pad (you should, really), you should contact your vendor and possibly get them to reapply the thermal paste, if new drivers don't help.

Are the fingerprint reader & webcam worth $100? Eurocom lets you get rid of them... the webcam is more of a personal choice(i dont need it..), but does anyone that owns the M860TU not recommend the fingerprint reader for some reason?

i have the same config as you and have also noticed i can only see 2553.
so i wonder whats happened to the missing 600mb. yes we are using 32bit and should be able to see upto 3.1gb ram.
if you have turbo cache then removing this will not make any difference to your low ram reading.this is a seperate card of 1gb,2gb or 4gb.

i think so far the webcam is pants and not very good quality at all.
the fingerprint reader i think is very helpfull especially if your computer is around other people that you dont want to use it.
ok,you can just add a user pasword that does exactly the same thing but im so fed up with passwords that this comes as a nice extra. programme it.and when you log in you can use either password or fingerprint.

there could be a glitch with it and the turbo cache. you have to load the turbo first and then the reader. i done it the other way round and have lost my turbo

Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Adapter Tab :)

As for the webcam, its not the best I saw but I find it useful personally, you never know when this can be handy ;)

As for the fingerprint, I find it a bit useless except for Windows login since the included software (even the 5.8 update) doesn't work with 32-bits browser when running on a 64-bits OS. And even I can't even get it to work with the 64-bits version of IE.

Don't worry about it, it is only a 512mb card. The bottom number, is the amount of memory that can be set aside for the card. 512mb dedicated, and 512mb system memory.
