Wouldn't a die shrink no longer make it a 9800m gtx...rather a brand new card

yes, and thats why its really pathetic that people can't read something at the top of the page, instead they just click on new thread whenever they have something random pop up in their heads.

Why would you want the 9800 GTX in the 8660 at this point in time? 9800 GT is more powerful card than the 8800 GTX already.

And the card is upgradable, later on when a better card with better cooling comes out, we'll just slap that in. :D

    So optimistic I am.

But is there an official specification of the 9800M series, stating the power requirements of these cards? I looked on the Nvidia website and they do not state it. Notebookcheck states some values but is says that the GT requires 65 W which I think shouldn't be supported as well by the new Clevo.

its not the power requirements thats keeping the 9800M GTX from being supported.

    its the heat.

(The MXM Type IV slot can handle the best of the best mobile vidoecards.)

    Put it this way.

It might fit, but it would also overheat, melt your laptop and/or set your pants on fire. Clearer?

I understand that, but where do you get that information for the 9800M cards (or even for other cards, speaking in general)? Is it something that can be retrieved from the specs, or does it have to be actually tested by the notebook manufacturer on the specific model?

TBH I don't think that's possible since the 8800M GTX consumes 35W
The 9700M GT consumming 45W is even more odd imo. It's a die shrunk 8700M GT, how can it consumes 16 more watts than the 8700?

Actually, that post is the origin of my query (and I think I have read almost all the posts of that thread during the past weeks).

I assumed that the power consumption was representative of the TDP, but I understand now that this is not the case : otherwise the 9800M GT would not be compatible either (assuming that the info from Notebookcheck is correct).

So I end up being a bit more confused ...

Let's assume notebookcheck is wrong. Shall we now? ;)

Take their specs on the FX3600M for example. It's based on the 8800M GTS, and has 64 SP's as well, but Notebookcheck has it at 96. Additionally, according to their own statistics, the FX3600M outscores the 8800M GTS for both 3dmark05 and 06 and yet it ranks below it.
