Hey all you veteran NP8662 owners out there, is there a consensus best cooler for this machine now? I saw in previous threads that a few people had the Zalman NC 2000 for it, and that it had a noticeable effect. Is it the best for combating the NP8662's high HDD temps?

Also, if you have any other cool tricks to keep the temps down (especially in Windows 7), feel free to share.

    Thanks!

Even though there was an idea for a thread to prove which one it was, there is no real consensus yet as which one's the best. The NC-2000 fits well with the frame of the laptop. I have one and it works pretty well with the laptop.

Another one that interested me was the Aeolus Enermax which also got positive feeback from M860 users. If they were more readily available I would have bought one as you can dissemble them to make them easier to take around with your notebook.

However the final thing I have to say is this, unless you live in Sahara like temperatures or plan to overclock it up the yingyang your best off without one. Clevo's are very well designed when it comes to cooling and even under load they shouldn't overheat. I bought my NC-2000 and two weeks later it went back in the box as I never really needed it. The M860 is already one cool customer.

Thanks Olad, I'll keep that in mind. The previous threads had scared me a little, but I'll test the temperatures when I get the machine, and if they are worrying, I'll get a cooler. I guess I can't go wrong with the Zalman or the Enermax.

Sorry, I guess I must not have found the last cooler thread...

There's plenty of them. One of theose questions that gets asked time and again, so we're getting very use to throwing a default answer like that in.

@Soviet Sunrise; Seriously, start a 'Grumpy Old Clevo Owners...' thread. It'll be the only one you'll care to look at. Ground rules?: You must have owned a Clevo for at least a year upwards. Seeming as other forums are 'owners' clubs I don't understand why exclusivity would render this one invalid. It'll be a good board to take out those pend up frustrations on. :p

I'm thinking about that one Oiad. It sounds like a good idea. Grumpy Soviet's Clevo venting thread for oldbies, haha.

Ah but those are for the M570; do those apply to the NP8662?

No, but it should give you a general idea of how to plan out this mod for any notebook.

I have been stalking the D900F.. I am 6 foot 6 inches tall and over 300lbs.. so a 17 inch screen or brick fits me like a netbook..

I bought my HDX 18 before I found NBR.. so I bought well for what I knew then.. a Q-9000 (it was my first quad and I didnt know what I know now or I would have bought the QX-9650 2.53GHz then).. I bought the 8gb of ram and twin drives... 250gb shallow and fast was the reasoning..

But then I wanted to mod the laptop.. HP hates people who tinker or want too.. and after reading and watching people like you.. THANK YOU! by the way.. I really want to hot rod my laptop.. as a car lover and mod person.. it just came about naturaly..

So back to the question the D900F.. but I want SLI.. raid 5 (or 4 as it was explained to me the other day.. 2 SSD's striped with a 500GB Mirror..

So I have a new (3 months old) laptop.. and I know what I want.. but controling the heat on the D900F is really an issue.. i7-975 or better..

I looked at the X chips (AVA offers them, but I have never seen anyone here talk about them?) but I will never use the dual chip benefits so unless someone like you says they are worth the extra monies? I doubt I will be noobush enough to just throw money away that way.. but 12gb of 1333 ram.. but it always comes back to the sli.. i watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWfWlTeoIgA&feature=PlayList&p=C1B06538A32767DF&index=34 and I think I know something now.. of course a LOT of the larger broerage houses are migrating to GPU power systems..

It would be a hot rod.. a toy.. that I would use and try to learn how to Over Clock on.. but I have been bitten by the laptop bug..

Your work.. what you have done.. and been GREAT! enough to make look simple.. have NOT! helped me not want to do more with computers..

You are great.. and the time taken to help people that you take speaks to what kind of person you really are.. I dont know how many people take the time to tell you Thank You! but I will say it for myself and I am sure a LOT! more people.

Sounds... Corny.. Noobish... and all those kinds of things.. and sorry for that but you deserve to here you are Great and Very Helpful..

Any way.. what do you think about a laptop with a real i7 and sli / crossfire coming out soon? The fact that HP now offers 4 dimm 16gb ram in the envy makes me want to think there are new mobos coming and soonish?

Thanks for taking the time to put up with people like me, JW

Personally I think the D900F is huge, though this is coming from a 5'9'', ~130lbs Asian guy. Even my M570TU is a wee bit on the larger side.

I go against the grain sometimes. I never liked SLi. I believe that a single GPU solution is the most effective path to take, for both the wallet and performance consistency. I even shun down on RAID, though this is mostly my bias from never needing RAID at all.

X chips? Do you mean the Xeon i7's? Unless you are doing something really, really insane that needs that much instruction crunching, I'd say stick to the desktop i7, and even that is overkill for most purposes.

The D900F poses a problem when trying to mod. Because the turbines are mounted ontop of the component cold plates, there is very little room for adding any copper. Drilling holes would not be as effective either because the heatpipes and the radiators are removing heat more efficiently since they are in a very close proximity. I would say that the D900F is already a perfect notebook.

I'd wait for prices for 4GB sticks to fall before investing in a 12GB kit. 4GB is plenty enough for most users and 8GB is already a godsend for pro apps users.

Again, thanks for your appreciation. I just do what I can. It's nothing much. All I do is give real, down to earth advice and opinions.

A notebook with a desktop i7 with twin top shelf GPU's is insane. The amount of money that can buy that notebook can get you the absolute fastest desktop on the market with all the bells ans whistles. Four slots for memory is an okay approach for those wanting 8GB of memory without having to resort to the more expensive 4GB sticks. 16GB is a waste, period. Unused memory is wasted memory. Plain and simple. Even my personal server doesn't have half of that.

    Congrats on 400 posts, JWnFL.

Haha, I'm not that desperate. I only do local customers and rarely those outside of the Bay Area, mainly because of the limited amount of time and resources I have available. Occasionally I would accept a machine or two from someone outside for repair over the summer when I'm not as busy.

You are a great sport.. I would rather listen to a pro.. than corporate swill any day of the week.. NBR.. becuase of the people here.. You, Soviet and others too.. (dont want "The Others" feeling left out) make this place priceless..

I dont know if I need a D900F... but bro.. do we need a GSXR? or a GTR Spec (of course)? a 911 2 wheel drive turbo (when the 4 wheel is easier to drive)

I thinks its about the fun.. and I dont need a car that goes 200mph.. but what does that have to do with the amount of monies pledged to college girls at the shoe show? (shoe show equals strip club)

The Clevo's I have looked at.. (and you are a Pro, so you dont count) from the inside.. are copper paneled..

    http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8662-built-clevo-m860tu-p-2564.html

I just figured out.. (Sorry) that you modded the copper paneling as well.. I thouhgt that they actually cared enough to ship them with the copper panel.. on the removable panel.. Dude.. You are that much better than I orginaly thought..

So no cooper paneling for the inside of a D900F? Bro.. why would you say such a mean thing? I was being kool.. someone has to Mod the new ZR1.. 650hp is not enough..

Be well and thanks once again for taking the time to help people who maybe like honestly dont deserve it.. it really does speak to the type of person you really are.. and that Bro.. means your Great! sounds corny but I dont care.

My best to you and yours Soviet Sunrise, JW

I dont think anyone thinks you are anything but really kool and know what you are doing.. I think anyone who did engage you should feel lucky.. like they got the right guy for the job as well someone who is a good person.. in the plainest of terms you deserve it.. good people should have good things happen to them..

Of course I am a Noob.. so my computer skills are severly lacking but not my ability to comprehend.

We are not done.. you and I.. If a noob can not handle the skill set.. then the noob will build a piece of hardware that can compete..

My best as always to you and yours Soviet Sunrise, JW

Haha, everyone on this forum deserves thanks and praise as well, JWnFL. I'm not the only one here helping others. The success of this forum is because of the joint effort everyone has put in and it would be immodest of me to sit here and listen to your thanks just to me.

I wish that were true, JWnFL. Good people should have good things happen to them. Unfortunately I have my own uphill battles ahead.
