I am very close to pulling the trigger on this laptop.
Were it not for the advent of Calpella, and Computex 09.
With the announcement that retailers were upset and wanted Calpella pushed back, for fear of not being able to move Montevina inventory stocks. I get the feeling that the Calpella line is a great step forward.
Also, in june, Intel plans to cut Montevina cpu prices 13-40%.
Bah, why do I always seem to need a computer at the end of a cycle.

If you need a computer now then just buy it, something new will always be around the corner and you will never end up owning anything if you just wait. If you wait or Calpella, then will you want to wait for USB 3.0, then the memristor, etc.

    like said.

there will always be new technology on the horizon.... so if you wait, you will be waiting forever.

buy it when you need it... as long as you do your research, you should not have buyers remorse. :)

yeah dude... if you remember we knew about i7 along tha same time they had core 2 duo refreshes with higher specs.. We know intels road map... we pretty much know ati and nvidia are competitive.. There's always something on it's way and if you can pay1500 for a laptop now that is going to last you for a couple years and handle everything.... because i did my research on the 8662 for a few weeks and i got it a couple days ago.. No regrets at all.. this thing is a beast.

The only time I waited was when I knew that the NP8660 was going to be refreshed with the new NP8662 with quad support and a better GPU. If I hadn't known the exact time scale or it was going to be a very long time, then I would have just purchased the NP8660.

I think you should buy the NP8662 right now unless you know exactly when what you are waiting for will be out.

I am enjoying my NP8662 and when you get it, you won't care about what new hardware is around the corner because it won't matter. The NP8662 is the best laptop I have ever owned, it handles demanding games and can max out most of them and I have absolutely no regrets.

What really surprises me is that I have a Quad Q9000 and a very good GPU in a 15'' chassis that runs so cool. My GTX260M runs under load at lower temps than of some other mid range GPU's I have seen when they are idle.

I should have probably outlined my deadlines. I need the computer by Aug 28th. I'm certinly going to wait untill at least June 5th after Computex. The processors being out of stock will delay me anyways. It's that bridge between the 5th of June, and the end of August that gets me. If I end up getting in at the tail end of Montivinia (which wasn't a huge improvement from Santa Rosa), it will be at least 2 years before I can jump in again. Being at the bottom of an upgrade path, vs the top, seems preferable. The timing is what matters.

You would have to replace the motherboard to use Calpella Cpu's. The T9900 is as high as Montivinia will go from what i've read.

You won't be able to buy a Calpella Notebook till at least January 2010, so don't feel bad buying montevina now. I'd be more interested in Clevo's new chassis if they make one, than the new CPU lol. Nvidia will have their new GPUs around then too, but it's still a long wait and it's hard to say how they will perform.

And when that happens we'll be waiting for the next best thing. Probably a REAL 8 core machine.

Why not buy an "interim" system? In other words, something that would fill 80-90% of your needs (10% being the latest and greatest), just buy a system that won't break the bank-

Set a budget, figure out the resale value, of the said system, while saving the money for the uber system in the near future--

This way you'll have something to use now, and at the same time, preparing for the notebook that would meet your target expectations--
