Can anyone help an idiot out?
Yes some of us are this dumb...

I don't know what version of Catalyst Control I have. I know that what came on my Sager (May 2010) wouldn't show my card in HWMonitor. I thought I downloaded 10.4, whatever it was it made HWMonitor able to see my card. I want to stay updated, so in Catalyst when I go to Information Center/Software, this is what I see:

    Driver Packaging Version 8.712-100302b-096986C-ATI
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1010
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
    Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0735
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9704
    Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2010.0302.2233.40412

Is that up to date? Where in Catalyst does it show 10.4? When I look in windows explorer I see C:\ATI\Support\ 10-3_mobility_vista_win7_64...etc and that leads me to believe I have 10.3.

Also, Sager's website under Driver Support lists a new HD5870m driver 8.683.0.0 dated 19Mar10. I downloaded that and ran the .exe, it installed something but I can't tell if it made any changes.

I would like to download 10.5 and 10.6 is why I'm asking. Sorry for rambling confusion, but honestly I'm trying to learn more.
    Thanks for any help!

    8.712- 100302b-096986C-ATI

    and here:

    20 10.0302.2233.40412

Sweet! Thanks so much for the reply. I feel slightly less foggy about it now. Gonna try to get 10.4 and then 10.5 and then maybe 10.6, but I don't wanna get too brave. Thanks again!

you don't need to install them in order, in fact it's best not to as it can clog up your system. Just jump to 10.6

    Thanks again theriko!
Also, do you know if it's still best to go through a complete uninstall of old versions before downloading a new one? I've read equal posts saying both ways. Thanks!

I always simply installs the new driver just like that, IMO don't see much point in uninstalling previous drivers before installing new one, it's not windows 95.

With regards to what HWMonitor not seeing your card, it may be the version of HWMonitor that you're using.

Jeebus I am a dim bulb.

I spent the better part of 2 days trying to install desktop drivers on my laptop. Found the mobility version of 10.6. All is well in my tiny, sheltered universe.
