Hi all, you guys have been a source of information and inspiration. Recently took the plunge to purchase a 6970m as an upgrade for my Sager (was 280m) and now I feel that it may not be a good choice.

I plugged it in, did the paste and pads as shared in the forums, underclocked the gpu.

Today after an hour of Skyrim, I heard beeping sounds followed by the system shutting down. I repasted thermal paste to both the gpu and cpu and while booting up, the num lock and scroll lock started flashing and the beeping started again.

I'm lost at what to do and since the laptop is around 2yrs old, warranty is over and the support here ain't too good either. I appreciate assistance on the matter and if there are any fix to the problem.

I am guessing the GPU is overheating. The best way to keep this beast cool and without having to modify the heatsink is to get the newest GPU heatsink made for the laptop and designed for the 5870M. It fits the card perfectly enough and cools it nicely. Part 6-31-w860n-061

I am still testing but with ambient temps at 20C and and undervolt of 1.060V I find so far 800/950 stable. These clocks net me on the highest sensor 87C and the lowest 79C after a hour of crysis 2 on max settings. At stock clocks and through undervolting I can keep the heat to around 80C max perhaps even a little less!

Heya King, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I am already using a custom made heat sink by Eurocomm for the 6970m.

Last I did was to redo the thermal paste for both gpu and CPU, boot it up. Shortly after both the num and caps lock flashed with the beeping sounds. Managed to get pass login before it shuts down on me. That was a few hours after the crash and it's definitely not the heat issue I feel.

I've tried searching the web, no solutions till date.

Which bios and ec are you running? You were able to run it beforehand so this may not be the problem but when I first installed my card I was getting a similar shutdown. I updated my bios and ec and that fixed the problem.
