    NP8690 vs. Alienware M15x and NP8690/NP8760 questions

Does the NP8690 beat the Alienware M15x in any angle big time? Lol, just wanna hear insights from you guys ;)

Do you think the 820QM would be more bang-for-the-buck than the 720QM?

Lastly, even though it's not right to compare 15.6" and 17" laptops I just have to ask these: would the NP8760 have temps way lower than the NP8690? And would buying an NP8760 well worth it than buying the NP8690?

Let me put it this way, all Clevo notebooks beat Alienware notebooks, and that includes the W860CU beating the M15x.

Both notebooks run cool, though the W870CU will still be a bit cooler because it is larger.

It depends on how you calculate the bang/buck factor.

    720QM @ 1.6ghz and $400, you are looking at 4:1 (every 4 mhz costs $1)

    820QM @ 1.73ghz and $600 you are looking at 2.88:1

    920XM @ 2.00ghz and $1150 you are looking at 1.74:1

Even at max OC, a 920XM yields 2.53ghz and $1150 you are looking at 2.2:1

You could weigh the scores of the 820 and 920 vs. the 720 based on the larger cache, but it isn't going to change much.

In every scenario, the 920xm is the least cost effective (no shock there). The 720qm gives you the best bang for your buck clearly.

Any of the i7 mobile chips is pretty much overkill for every GPU solution on the market, especially at 1680x1050 and higher.

If you are looking for what is the best bang/buck chip, definitely go with the 720qm.

If you have a small budget surplus or don't want what is deemed the, "entry level," CPU, go with the 820qm.

So your saying the Clevo W870CU would beat an M17x SLi laptop?

Beat them in what? Aesthetics? Weight? E-peen? If you mean GPU performance, then no, simply because the W870CU doesn't have a second GPU. Take away the second GPU on the M17x, and then the W870CU would still win because of sheer cooling power allowing for a more aggressive overclock. However, do keep in mind that whether a notebook can beat another notebook is also dependent on the skill and experience of the user.

In a few hours, there are going to be a bunch of people replying to your post saying that it's like comparing apples and oranges because twin GPU's are in a different league compared to single GPU setups.

The NP8690 comes with a better GPU than the M15x (although I've heard that people have put a GTX-280M in the M15x, you'd have to buy your own separately and install it).

Also note that the M15x weighs more than a pound and a half more than the NP8690, and is 2 inches deeper, which means it's harder to lug around. On the flip side, it does get better battery life than the NP8690, although how much of that is from the GTX-260M and how much is from a simply bigger battery would require testing.

As for NP8760 over the NP8690, well, for me it's an easy choice, because the NP8760 is barely larger than my current 17", offers dual HDD bays, and has a BIOS overclock feature for i7 920XM CPUs (not that I'm likely to get one right away, but it's nice to have the option for future use). I don't really play FPS games, so a single GPU is probably good enough for the RTSes and MMOs I'd bother playing. I don't plan to get a new notebook until the Christmas season, though, so while the NP8760 is my current front runner, something might come up down the pipe that'll interest me more...

EDIT: Eh, darn it - spoke to soon. They even stole the slogan you used.

Give me a SAGER/CLEVO over a AW anyday.
The frig*n AW is just way to big and who needs the flashy lights anyway. :nah: I know I don't.
The only thing the AW has that I wish the SAGER/CLEVO had is the backlit keyboard but that's not a deal breaker.
Give me a better cooling system and better GPU and I'll take those every time.

I guess that depends on your definition of "beat" Soviet.

Are you serious? Just proves posting the "which is better" question in a forum that heavily favors one side is useless. Your statement is 100% false.

Just so you know I've been scoping out the W870CU for purchase. I think I'm more biased that the average Alienware/Clevo owner. I don't start spreading lies about one system to make another one better. That's just childish.

I'm not spreading lies, I'm spreading facts. Have you seen the new benchmark tests for the W860CU and the new M15x? http://tinyurl.com/2w4apm

Looks like you're getting a few wrinkles around the cheeks, Mandwake. You should be a kid again. It feels good.

Yes, I am in the US. Atleast I'm not from Mars.
