So anybody happy with the sound output of the NP8690? How well does this laptop handle headphones and external speakers? Noisy output? Output too low?

I'm no audio enthusiast - the sound from the speakers is not bad --> which is not good either. To compensate, I use Altec Lansing BXR1221 speakers or my in-ear Sennheiser CX300 and I'm quite satisfied with the audio that I get.

Oh excellent then. I'm just worried that maybe the laptop circuitry is too noisy or loses too much signal. But if your speakers/buds are doing the trick there should be nothing to worry about.

External speaks, 'phones work just fine. The laptop actually has a pretty decent sound card (or at least, better than what it ought to have, given its speakers).

Laptop speaks work, just don't be an audio snob. They can be pushed reasonably loud, and have easily better quality sound than cheap externals or 'phones. They're just less than what someone expecting a "full-on hardcore gaming experience" might want to hear.

Sound works fine for a notebook sound. Though personally I usually use my external amp with creative T3 speakers and UM2 IEMs.
