Can I dual boot with windows xp and windows 7 on a NP8760? Is there an option to change from ahci to ata in the bios?

I don't know if you can switch to ATA instead of AHCI but you should be able to get XP installed with the AHCI drivers located here:
IntelĀ® 5 Series Chipset 32-bit IntelĀ® RST Driver Files for F6 Install
You will also need a USB floppy drive that XP will detect when you press F6 during installation. Not every USB floppy drive is supported.
If you don't have a USB floppy drive handy (which everyone should have), another option is to use nlite to add the above drivers to your XP install disk. You will need a blank CD. Instructions here:
Integrate Driver into Windows Installation CD using nLite - Step by step Tutorial
Of course for dual booting XP should be installed first, followed by windows 7. Instructions here:
Install more than one operating system (multiboot)
Remember to make backups before getting started.
Good luck! -
Thank you so much! Could I use this driver for any laptop, including my HP? When I boot my xp cd I get a blue screen.
-
What model HP do you have?
Even if you can't use this driver, you can use the one for the chipset on your HP, as long as an XP driver is available. -
My model is a Dv4-2145dx.

You can probably use these drivers:
HP Compaq 6735b Notebook PC- AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver - HP Business Support Center
Not 100% sure though. Let me know if it works! -
Nope it didn't work, maybe I did something wrong? I downloaded and installed the .exe file with the link you provided. I then used nlite to find the driver in the installed folder. When I booted with the new cd it still blue screened. The driver description is AMD Sata AHCI Controller-x86 platform.
I think you gave me the right driver though, that's odd it still blue screened. -
If it still Blue Screen's then you probably have the wrong drivers. Can you see the Stop Error whenit blue screen's?
What Operating System is on the HP now? Can you check Device manager to see what SATA drivers are currently installed? -
The current controller in device manager is called:
Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
I currently have Windows 7 installed.
The blue screen error code comes up when the bottom of the screen reads setup is starting windows.
The code that appears is: ***Stop: 0x000007B (0XF78D663C, 0XC00000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) -
Well a stop 7B is XP not being able to talk to the SATA controller. so it is a driver issue. In device manager, right click the controller, goto properties, then details. There select hardware IDs in the drop down. You should have a VEN_ and DEV_. Please post them and I'll see if I can figure it out from there.

The drivers Imentioned will work but you need to modify the ahcix86.inf file to include the following line in the list.
%NapaDesc%=Napa_Inst,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4391&SUBSYS_3642103c
Recreate using nlite and you should be good to go.
Let me know, Nova -
I got it working! Found these drivers with the modification already in place:
RAID7xx.zip - Windows Live
Thanks so much for all your help, got one more question though. My HP restore disks are wiping out any partition change or installation I make with xp and it's not letting me dual boot. Can I just torrent a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium OEM using my existing cd key? That would allow me to configure the partitions properly with Windows 7. -
That should work fine.
-
Yes the OEM copy will work fine. You might have to download all your drivers directly from HP since the OEM CD may not have some of them. Make sure to check Device Manager after the installation is done.
Glad it worked out.
