Hello,
So I ordered a NP8860 from PcTorque.com I noticed that everyone else seemed to order from somewhere else like Xotic. Initially I was going to order from there but they didn't have the hard drive I wanted. I wanted a solid state hard drive. Anyway here is my build:
Sager Notebook 8660 Qty: 1
15.4" WSXGA+ Glossy LCD (1680x1050) Qty: 1
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz (P9500) Qty: 1
4096MB (4GB) DDR3 1066MHz (Requires 64 Bit Operating System) Qty: 1
[No Intel Turbo Memory] Qty: 1
NVIDIA 9800M GT with 512MB DDR3 Video Memory Qty: 1
128GB Solid State Disk Drive Qty: 1
8X DVD±R / RW / 4X + Dual Layer Drive with Software Qty: 1
Intel 5300AGN Wi-Fi Link Qty: 1
As you can see I got the 128GB SSD. Has anyone else ordered one with a SSD? If so how does it perform? What is the high load temp? Are SSDs usually lower temp than normal mechanical drives?
Thanks!

Weren't the 128GB SSD recalled or something due to file corruptions?
-
They were offered on the site? I hope not, otherwise I can't get this machine.
-
-
Wow.. you can afford a 128 Gig solid state hard drive? I think Eurocom had those hard drives priced at $1200... for just the hard drive! at least it won't have heat issues.
-
Yeah I had a 2500$ budget. Though this went over a little, but I think I'll be happy if what BlueMak says isn't true. I feel the hard drive is the culprit of all modern laptops. It was ~400-500$ upgrade USD. If I recall.

According to the second paragraph of this post by a reseller, the problem was with SSD's and RAID, not the drives being used individually.
-
Ah, ok, good, so I shouldn't have an issue since I only have 1 SSD

I canceled my order from them before, because I was ordering NP8660 with Ati graphic card. Then after I placed the order, I emailed them whether if they have the ati graphic card, they emailed me back saying they don't have it and told me to upgrade to nvidia graphic card and pay additional 180 bucks for the upgrade, that's why I canceled the order. I would suggest you to email them ask them if they really have that SSD drive.
-
I am glad I wasn't 100% right on this one.
jtm, I hope you enjoy your new computer -
-
I sure hope I can get this SSD now as it would be awesome to see what kind of speeds I would get.

Well I can't get in touch with PCTorque. I called Sager (the number was on PCTorque's site) and asked the guy (who barely spoke English) if PCTorque was a reseller. He said yes, then I asked if there were any "Solid State drives" he instantly said "NOPE", then I was like "What about the NP8860?" he said "NOPE! NOPE NOPE!" And that was the end of the conversation. Now I am really worried. I am not going to buy this if I cannot have a solid state drive! Urghh
-
You could always buy the cheapest conventional harddrive they offer (or ask for none) and source an SSD from elsewhere.
-
I thought of that, but I wasn't sure on how to go about doing that. I don't see the problem of why they couldn't make it an option. The "no" still hasn't come from PCTorque directly yet (I guess they are still on their vacation??). I tried calling numerous times, sent multiple emails, I just want a reply! And how am I supposed to know their business hours if they don't post it. I just hope PCTorque can stick in the SSD for me so I don't have to go through all the hassle... I don't see why PCTorque would do this to their customers. I can't even check the order status, the site is being worked on, and like they have deals up that expired at the end of July. I am super confused!

People on NBR said PCT is on holiday for 2 weeks or something.
I believe Sager had its resellers pull the OCZ Core SSD because the drives were failing at an abnormally high rate.
I'll be back with the original announcement.
Sager has withdrawn the OCZ SSD hard drives -
Urgh, I guess I must cancel my order then. What a pitty...

Initially I ordered from PCTorque too, because they said they had ati graphic card which was cheaper. I canceled it, and ordered from xoticpc.com instead, because they got more warranty than other resellers for the same price.

How come no one gets the higher resolution screen?
-

Because it would be hard to read small text with high resolution. You have to adjust the text size all the time, and some programs does have the option to adjust text size.
Basically, too hard to read stuff with higher resolution. -
-
I ordered the WUXGA. I don't find the text too small but most people will just increase the text size to 120dpi or so.
Everyone claims that screens look best running at their native resolution, so if you were only going to run WSXGA then it would look nicer on a WXSGA screen rather than a WUXGA screen (I don't even know if WUXGA can run that resolution).
The other con of WUXGA is that it would be more taxing on games if you played at native resolution. So, if you were going to browse and use Office and whatever else at WUXGA and game at a lower resolution that would be okay, but if you were planning to buy a WUXGA screen and just run it at a lower resolution all the time there probably wouldn't be any point spending the extra money.
I'm not sure that the WUXGA is of a nicer screen quality than WSXGA in any sense besides resolution. The WSXGA is glossy so colors should actually look more vibrant when compared to the WUXGA, which is matte. -
-
The only reason i got the WUXGA was for the Matte. I just can not stand glossy, it drives me freeking bonkers !?!!?
-
I wanted a glossy WUXGA for the colors but thinking about it now the change would have probably been too much for me since I've lived on matte screens since... Forever.
Even my old CRT was matte, as far as CRT's can be matte. It didn't have that weird reflective coating some CRT's do (did).
