I dont care at all how loud it is at full load. The problem is that the cpu fan is really noisy at idle, for no reason. How am I supposed to use this thing in class with the fan humming away?

Sounds like you work in a noisy environment.

as you cand see in my sign I have a really "low" performance rig (i5 & 660M) and the idle/office/surfing temps are 46-53 degrees C for CPU and 30 degrees C for video card and with this temps still both fans starts.

air expelled from the video card fan is very cold, which it clearly shows that the video card is unused.

when you read news on the internet at night this laptop is really loud and you are very unhappy about that.

i have another laptop, dell studio 1555, which is more quieter with the CPU in 52 degrees C and GPU in 54 degrees C.

I hope that clevo will do a BIOS update to improve the fact that video card fan (which is louder that the CPU fan) starts when the video card is idle. this is not normal in my opinion.

Have a friend that has the m17x, and it definitely sounds like a vacuum cleaner when under load >.>

Seems to me your notebook needs better cooling since the fan here is barely on.

A problem when trying to do noise comparisons on SPL (dB) measures is that these number don't convey the subtleties of the sound spectrum. Although one laptop may have a lower SPL than another, if the other has a "whiter" spectrum than it will most likely not be as disturbing.

And I think these Clevos are amongst the worse "spectrum-wize".

According to Notebookcheck the fans reach 34-35Db when idling. That's what my current Acer 5551G gets in full load (have it undervolted, doesn't get warm enough for the fan to ramp to the last stage) and it's definitely noticeable on a quiet environment.

That may or may not be accurate (just like the data I linked to). I have no idea, so I'll take your word for it. However, I would think that some data is better than none, or better even than anecdotal evidence and youtube videos. I don't really have a horse in this race since I technically don't even have my machine yet. I'm just trying to help.

Personally, I'm willing to live with a little noise since I wanted a solid gaming rig, but everyone has their own priorities.

I found my P-170em fans to be relatively quiet, but I should add that I fly P-3's, which aren't exactly quiet and they have probably done a number on my hearing. It does seem quieter than my HP, though. However, that's just my observation and I have no way of backing it up with actual measurements.

I guess most of us will not be bothered by the fan noise when we are gaming, and the main problem lies with the fact that the fan noise is pretty loud even when surfing the net/typing documents.

question: can the fans be replaced with higher quality/quieter aftermarket options?

I know Noctua are some of the best for desktops...maybe they have laptop equivalents and might be much better

the poblem is that fan dont shut when temp go down. You must open program like kombustor and fan will shutdown automatically.
When I surfing my temp is about 42 but when temp go up to 49 the fan start to run.Fan keep running and running.I check temp and it is 33C but fan still running. It will shut down when I open kombustor. This drive me crazy.

What is responsible for fan cycle? Bios or drivers?

But only the GPU fan turns off right? Didn't you mention that the CPU fan is always on though?

Is this with a cooler under your laptop?

yes,cpu fan is running but it is very quiet, not a poblem
    no cooler
I was talking about gpu temp which is 42

I also open the fan and I put small amount of grease on fan shaft
now I hear only air blowing

Are you putting grease on both the CPU fan and the GPU fan? I'm also curious as to what kind of grease you're using and how often you've needed to re-apply it so far (if at all).

I'm considering getting a NP9150 but am concerned about the noise levels when idle. I don't care if the noise is higher during a game but I'd just like something that's not going to make excessive noise in a classroom.

Just got my NP9150, and I'm also having this fan noise issue. my GPU fan seems to blow constantlly, even when I'm not doing anything at all on my laptop it blows slightly warm air. My CPU fan also blows constantly, blowing very cool air even when I'm doing nothing at all. Any way to fix this?

Why would my GPU (7970m) blow slightly warm air even when my laptop is doing absolutely nothing? Bad enduro setting? Any way to remedy this, maybe a bios update? maybe I'll just have to grease my fans LOL

The CPU and GPU can't completely be cooled passively. They both require a bit of airflow at idle. I don't know if the fan tables are the same in the latest bios of the P150EM as those of the P170EM, but it seems the P170EM's fans are now behaving reasonbly ok. It's possible then that an external cooler could keep the internal fans off.

What RPM do you have on your fans at idle?
