I have been using my laptop for the past 3 years with no issues at all and it is still a beast imo. One area I am lagging in is RAM, especially when I have 30 tabs open in chrome.

I am looking to add/upgrade my RAM. Any recommendations and considerations?

I currently have 2x4GB 1600MHz Dual Memory (so I assume they are 800Mhz each)

What are the advantages/disadvantages in say the following options:
    - Add 2x4GB
    - Add faster 2x4GB
    - Add 1x8GB
    - Replace completely

whatever you do, id definitely get at least an upgrade involving two sticks, so that ur RAM is in dual channel mode. with a single stick ur bandwidth basically gets cut in half.

with that said, when u add two more sticks of 4GB each, it doesnt matter at what speed their rated at, their gonna run at the slowest speed installed in the system. so if u decide to add 2x4 GB 2133 mhz theyre gonna run at 1600 mhz, same as the already installed sticks. so best thing from a financial point of view would be to add another 2x4 GB 1600 mhz sticks.

if u want to upgrade and exchange the old sticks, itd probably be best getting 2x8 GB 1866 Mhz or 2133 mhz, no reason to get urself 4 sticks with 4 GB :)

Thanks I see. The problem is that the installed sticks are under the keyboard and I do not want to open it up to replace it. I would rather add 2 more under the cover

in that case the choice is made ;) you could still opt for 2x8gb sticks without losing dual channel though

You get double the RAM and for cheaper as opposed to adding larger modules.
You won't gain much, if anything, by mixing speeds. Doing so may even cause instability.
Nice boost in overall capacity, but it will run in single channel.
Costly but gives you the most flexibility.
