Hi everyone, I'm going to be receiving a shiny new NP9150 tomorrow, and I have a few questions...hope some or maybe even all can be answered by you awesome bunch!![]()
1. I ordered a Samsung 840 Pro SSD to put in the main hard drive bay, and I will be putting the standard HDD in the optical bay. The SSD will be here at the same time as the laptop. What should be the proper order of doing things here? Should I turn on the laptop before switching the main hard drive, or should I pop it open right away and do the switch? Also, what needs to be done after making the SSD the main drive? Will it begin installing Windows 7 on the SSD automatically? I have heard the Samsung SSD's come with nice software that really helps with this kind of thing, but I am not sure what to do here...(sorry, this was a bit of a loaded question(s).
2. Where can I find the instruction manual for the NP9150? I am unsure of how to properly switch the HDD and SSD into their proper spots...
3. I have heard the Samsung SSDs do not fit properly (too small). Is this the case when trying to put them in the optical bay, or main bay? I'm putting the SSD in the main bay (SATA III slot) so I can utilize the SSDs full capabilities.but I was wondering if it fits...
4. Lastly, I do not have an external hard drive. What is the fastest way to get all of my "stuff" on this laptop I'm currently using, onto the Sager?
Thanks![]()

3. I put my Samsung 840 pro into the SATA 0 slot which is located behind/above the dvd drive. It has a little case thing that you screw it into so you know it won't move(at least on an p170EM it does, might be different with a P150EM).
4. Buy a 2.5" harddrive enclosure and that way you can plug the drives directly into your current computer to copy stuff over. They shouldn't cost more than $20. -
congrats
the user manual is on the driver disc you should get but just in case here they are on their website custom gaming laptops - Welcome to Sager Notebooks (9150 at top) cant direct link to them as blocked at work. -

Congrats from us as well!
For the OS install it'll be best to boot up as it comes just to make sure everything is working right as it came. If everything checks out, shut it down and install the new drive. You're going to want to do a clean install of the OS, I think you were referring to migrating the old drive to the Samsung SSD but a clean install will be best. Then you'd just want to install the drivers off the disk and you're good to go. -

If you do migrate your HDD over to the SSD use a tool that is designed for SSDs as old software may not align the data properly and cause problems.
-
Thank you very much for the replies!
After I install the OS initially on the regular HDD for the first time, how do I get it off of it and reinstall the OS onto the SSD? -
I thought after putting everything on the HDD, I could just move over a few games/apps onto the SSD? Is it a bit more complex than that?

Share with us your spec configuration so we have a good idea of what we're advising on. If you got your system with no OS but HDD included, then you'd want to just skip the initial install and put your SSD in there. If you got no OS and no HDD in the system, same case and just install the SSD then install the OS. If you got the system with HDD and OS, then do as I initially suggested and test the system out, once everything is checked remove the old drive and install the new one. The 9150 only has one HDD bay, so to install the SSD in there would require physically removing the included HDD. If the HDD isn't in there you'll have no problem not booting to it. -
Sorry about that, Derek!

Games will likely have to be re-installed to make sure it all points to the right place, but that requires no special software if the OS is remaining on the HDD, of course this means boot times and OS speed wont improve. -
Right, that's fine. According to Derek because I have no OS pre-loaded it sounds like I can put the SSD straight in the main slot and put the HDD in the optical bay. However the SSD isn't coming today, and I don't know if I'll be able to have this shiny new laptop sitting, not being used! Is it possible to remove the OS off the HDD, put the HDD in the optical drive bay, then put the SSD in the main harddrive bay, and load the OS onto that? I apologize if that comes off as confusing...

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, though you may have to phone activate the OS because the key has been used more than once, but that is a legal thing to do so long as you remove the original copy.

Hello
Im looking to get this Laptop any suggestion
Comparing it to
Alienware m14x
Asus G46
This seems to be the most powerful Under 15" Laptops
also cos it lighter
Also want to know if there is anything coming up better than this
any better Graphic card coming anytime soon ? -
Actually, it looks as though the SSD will be here at the same time as the laptop! I suppose taking out the HDD, and putting the SSD in its place before the initial bootup would be the easiest thing to do...

Alright, cool.
So what you're doing is swapping that 750gb into the ODD caddy and the Samsung into the primary bay. Since you're getting it no OS, just open it up, remove the old drive, and install the SSD. Leave the HDD out until after the install so you don't accidentally reinstall onto it. Then when you power it back on you'll be able to go into the BIOS and specify the boot drive priority to boot to the SSD first. Since you don't have an ODD you'll want to create a USB bootable drive to install off of. You can follow this guide HERE if you need help. When you get the Windows installer up, just select the SSD as the install location and follow the steps. Once you get Windows up and running, stick that HDD into the caddy, format it using disk management tools in Windows, and you should be good to go. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes if you can do it all at once. -
Thanks everybody for the assistance.
-
Accidental double post.
-
Not from my experience. I used my W7 Ult key quite a few times(over 10 i'd say) thus far and it has activated without a problem. Microsoft probably deactivates the other computer(i'm not sure since I did this when I would format and fresh install).
Don't have more than one drive in the computer when you're doing a fresh install. If Windows ends up storing boot data on the second drive it will leave your pc nonoperational if you remove that 2nd drive. I don't know what are the chance of this happening but I like to be sure that it doesn't. -
Ok, I have the Samsung in the primary bay, but my BIOS will not recognize it at all. I tried changing it to AHCI, IDE, and even RAID to see if it would be detected...but it isn't.

It should show up in the bios.
Do you have access to another machine so as to try the SSD in? -
got ur PM.
have u made sure that the ssd is properly connected? as in, push it as far as it goes?
u said when u stick the ssd into the odd caddy its recognized by the bios. have u booted windows with the ssd in the odd bay and tried to format and partition it before trying it again in the main sata slot?
make sure u have the latest bios for your machine, just to get that out of the way...
one more thing u could try: stick the ssd into the main sata port. boot the machine, go into bios. if the ssd doesnt show up, go to "save and exit", let the machine reboot and go straight back into the bios. see if its recognized now.
cheers -
Thanks for the reply, lemme try those options...
-
OK, I installed Windows 7 on the SSD in the optical bay slot...then plugged it back into the main bay, and my BIOS still won't see the SSD...this is making me pull my hair out!
EDIT: FIXED IT!!! It turns out the SSD is so thin that I was sliding it UNDERNEATH the actual SATA port. It's very strange, it fit perfectly, and I couldn't tell it wasn't even connected. For those who get the Samsung 830/840...MAKE SURE you're actually plugging it into the port and not sliding it underneath the port!
-
lol, ok, so much for making sure its connected properly!
glad u figured it out buddy, enjoy ur new beast

Got it! Thank you! OK, I have two MORE problems now unfortunately...firstly, and most important...I'm having some serious issues with my Bigfoot Networks card, it keeps cutting off connection to the internet repeatedly. I'm right next t the router and my other laptop is connecting fine...it also says I have a full connection, even when I can't access any sites or download games. Secondly, I installed the latest Nvidia driver and fired up the crysis 3 beta, and i'm getting a good 5-10 FPS on the lowest of the low settings...these leads me to believe the graphics cards aren't switching from the Intell one to the Nvidia...how can I fix this?
Thanks so much for all of your help btw. -
Open up the NVIDIA control panel, manage 3d settings, program settings, and see if your game is listed there. If it isn't click 'Add' and then find the game executable(or on the newest drivers choose from the list). You'll have to do this for many games as not all recognize optimus and default to the intel card.
