    Hey everyone,

My NP9170 was running fine (relatively) yesterday. I shut it down last night and went to bed. I woke up this morning and my laptop would not start. A few days ago my battery gave me a "critical, replace" warning, but since I wasn't planning on being away from my desk I just left it plugged into the AC outlet. Other than that there haven't been any issues. Do any of you know what could be wrong, and how to fix it? The laptop is about 2 years old.

    Thanks!

    hi
a bit rushed here but try a EC reset.

remove mains and battery and press and hold down on button for 20 seconds.
then plug mains in without battery and try and boot.
then try on battery only without mains but i guess your battery is totally dead if you get a critical error. should last more than 2 years though.

could be a fluke and you had a battery fail and psu fail at the same time. is there a light on the psu when its plugged in or is there any buzzing noise whith it.

post back after you try that.

Fan in still running within my PSU. No luck with the method you posted.

Possibly screen failure? Do you have an external screen you can hook up and try.

Slight misunderstanding, probably. I meant there is a fan within my power brick that is still running. My laptop doesn't respond at all (no lights, no fans). Definitely not a screen failure.

Also, I see you're with XoticPC (where I bought my Sager from). Has anyone else reported this issue? I saw it once on the forums: http://xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?16944-Part-urgently-needed-for-Sager-NP-170-Clevo-P170em

I hope they found a fix, but I haven't seen any answers yet.

    Thanks!

Edit: Some people believe it is a blown capacitor. Not sure how to progress with that information.

Have you tried a different power outlet in your house, its an odd request but has worked before. If you're still not getting any response from the computer you'll want to request an RMA under the "Contact" section on our site so we can get it check out by Sager.

I've tried a few outlets throughout the day. Looks like the computer it totally unresponsive. I've taken my harddrive and placed it in my old Sager, so at least I have a computer to work with.

Question about the RMA. Since this is most certainly a motherboard issue now, what can I expect to be paying? At a certain point, motherboard repairs outweigh the cost of getting a new computer. Thanks for the help!

do you not still have warranty. if not only xotic can answer that one for you.
im not sure which power brick you have but there was a lot of talk a few years ago about people reporting the fan in the brick was spinning. only thing was those power bricks didnt have fans so that could be the main fault.it could be a capacitor or something like that in the brick that sounds like a fan.

Interesting. Is there a way to check if my charger works? I mean, I still assume it's the laptop causing the issue, because it would still start via battery, which should still have some charge.

You can check the voltages using a volt-ohm meter/multimeter. If the light on the brick comes on when connected to an outlet, that's a good sign.

If you're under warranty and its a hardware failure then it shouldnt cost you anything. If the warranty is no longer valid then Sager would have to quote out a price after inspecting the computer.

Boards can range from anywhere between $300 - $600 (subjective to the seller and model). Obviously that's a bit broad brushed and rather a large margin, but hopefully it gives you some idea of what you will be getting yourself into, if you are out of warranty.
