Can't seem to find much info on the LCD panels Clevo/Sager use for the NP9170

I'm particularly interested in these two:

    -Glossy 95% Gamut
    -Matte 72% Gamut

How do these stack up versus the new Samsung Series 7 Gamer with its 400 nit and supposedly the best piture quality on any laptop LCD in the market.

Basically, are we getting mediocre panels or they are just as good?

There is a long post by Mythogic with many pics showing those 2 panels and the stock under multiple conditions including calibrated. Non-calibrated I actually preferred the Matte but calibrated the Glossy 95% absolutely blew everything away. The regular looked pretty dull in every comparison.

any links to the post? don't suppose you know if it's the same story for the NP9150? After seeing a video of it now, I think I like it better than the NP9170 cause of the rubberised matte finish and the fact that they keyboard is identical. They wasted a lot of space on the NP9170. Plus I think the NP9150 comes with a 95% Gamut Matte option.

    Review Clevo P170EM Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

Scroll down to the display part for a review of the matte screen.

Most programs are colored in the sRGB spectrum, which is fully displayed on 72% gamut. Stock screens are in the 60% range, the matte screen is at exactly 72% gamut, and glossy is far and above at 90%.

I prefer the matte because after playing on glare screens they have just started to annoy me. This matte screen is very good in particular because it sports high brightness and low black values, things that are generally shortcomings on matte screens.

The glossy screen will be more vivid because it has no coating on it, but chances are that unless you do color work the extra gamut won't really matter. However, if you play in the dark or don't mind the reflections it is also a very good screen.

If you plan on hooking the laptop up to a monitor constantly, I would suggest getting neither.

I've tried the forum search feature but it doesn't appear to be working. Mythlogic of course has tons of posts so it would be problematic trying to find the post since the only way would be to go through every post he has made. The high gamut glossy was actually a little too saturated uncalibrated but after calibration it was jaw dropping.

I find the 90% glossy (it is 90%, not 95% if you look) satisfyingly good. Not OMGBBQ wonderful, but good. For reference I use an NEC 2690QUXi which is a professional IPS panel, on my desktop.

The laptop screen is very bright, brighter than I find any reason to need, I usually run it at one tick from minimum during the day, and all the way down at night. The colours are good, they give more saturation than "standard" but look real good, not blown out. Viewing angles are good for a TN, I'm fairly pleased, not perfectly wide like I have on my desktop but then no TN can do that. It is glossy so that sucks, but worth it for a good display.
