I own an NP9170 with an NVidia 680M.
Recently I've been trying to watch television shows off my laptop by connecting the laptop to my television via HDMI.
Problem is, whenever I connect the television and my laptop, performance plummets across the board. Not only is the video choppy and stuttery, but ALL functions on my computer are slowed down. Programs load slower and video games such as Deus Ex have massive framerate drops.
Even after unplugging the HDMI cable the performance problems will persist. Only after rebooting the computer will performance return to normal.
There's no cooling problem. Temperatures are fine and the fan isn't working hard. I have no idea what could be going on, honestly.

Thanks for the replies so far.
My drivers are all updated and the problem persists.
Also, I dealt with the Intel HD Graphics problem a while back while playing Skyrim. My Global 3D settings have always forced the NVidia graphics processor to run at all times. -

It certainly sounds like it's utilizing the HD 4000 graphics. Which driver release are you on? NVidia currently has a BETA. You can try uninstalling your current driver and then installing the BETA (do a clean install if you do).

I currently have this same issue, Tomb Raider will not load when i'm on an external monitor via Display port...comes up with an error:
Failed to initialize Direct#D with current settings....
However if i extend to a 2nd monitor, them launch the game on the laptop monitor, make it not full screen and then drag it to the other monitor and make it full screen again, everything seems smooth and works fine.....
Why would i have to do this? Any ideas, i would like to be able to just plug it in, close the laptop lid and launch the game in the monitor window using the Nvidia GPU, but it seems to only use the Intel one unless I do what i said above......
Anyone else seen this?
Yes all my drivers are up to date. I get nearly 60 fps on Tomb Raider normally -

So is this how it would have to be done then? do you see the same thing? after tricking it like this i get great FPS and everything is fine but seems silly to have to do that.
Btw this also happens when only having the external monitor on and the laptop closed... So can't just be an extended issue.
Anyone else seen this behavior? Is the only way to fix it the way I described above? -

It's true these connections are all routed through the integrated chip, but with the lid closed I am struggling to think of differences between displaying through the LVDS or just the HDMI connection.
Maybe make sure the HDMI sound driver is not getting up to shenanigans?
NP9170 w/ 680M, performance decrease when using external monitor via HDMI
