Well I just bought Assassin's Creed III and the game is running like crap. I've had to put the graphic settings (all FIVE of them, thanks Ubisoft) on low to medium just to get playable fps in this game.
I know CPU and GPU overclocking is risky when done by novices and often doesn't even give huge gains in performance, but it's an option I want to at least investigate considering at this point the $60 I spent on AC3 might as well have been flushed down the toilet. I really expected this NP9170, with the specs I've configured, to be able to blast through most contemporary titles on medium to ultra settings. In Max Payne 3 and Guild Wars 2 I can set *almost* everything to max and get steady 60fps. So what gives here?
My specs:
2.4ghz i7-3610QM
NVidia 680M
16gb RAM
2x 128gb SSDs in RAID strip.
I've read in a couple places that ACIII may be poorly CPU optimized and that overclocking the CPU might be a bandaid for the situation.
But in researching OCing my CPU I'm finding conflicting reports about whether it's even possible for the 3610QM....
So can I get some advice here?

Update your drivers to 310.61. Or 310.54 These 2 Beta drivers are optimized for ACIII.
I get 40+ FPS most of the time, 30+ in Boston where even desktop GTX 680 owners report having ~20 FPS.
If you are still unhappy after the driver upgrade, you could still try to OC it, even though I have no idea if it's easily possible with a non -xm mobile cpu.
*Edit: At maxed settings, 1080p -
Ah I'll try downloading the beta drivers, 310.61.
I've been using the 306.97.
Will update with results of that. Would love to see ANY improvement. Really don't want to mess with overclocking... Thank you sirana! -
HUGE, HUGE IMPROVEMENT
Thank you so much sirana. The 310.61 drivers did the trick.
I can also now alt+tab out of AC3. Thanks again man! -
ftr and fyi, OP, the 3610/3630 cannot be overclocked.

You cannot overclock the 600 series CPU's
The 700 and 800 series support XTU, but Clevo's BIOS doesent allow it.
The 900 series are overclockable, but you will need Mythlogic's BIOS to do it.
I dont think the CPU was the problem for your low FPS anyways. -

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the p170em supports xtu and power/multiplier changing on unlocked cpus. The bad news is that the 3610qm is totally locked. However you could buy a 3720qm or higher and be able to get 400mhz more turbo from them. The 3920xm would be unlocked completely.
NP9170, overclocking the the i7-3610QM CPU?
