I recently received the Sager NP9261 from xoticpc. Everything was great! It came with no OS, so I installed XP and all the drivers and my software no problem. Then a couple of days later I went to watch a DVD on my computer and had a problem. The optical drive was no longer seen by the computer. I have no idea when or why it stopped being seen.
I've checked the device manager, scanned for new hardware, with no results. I've checked the BIOS and can't find anything there either.
I have seen this problem in some laptops running Vista, but the problems are there from the beginning, not a few days after I install everything. In that case some editing of the registry needed to be done.
I'm hoping some one else has seen this, or knows what's going on. I'm also hoping the answer isn't that I need a new optical drive.
Thanks.

format c
re-install windows.
call xoticpc -
I would take door #3 call XOTIC PC(or your retailer)
-
Its really that bad, eh? There's nothing else I can try first?
-
I hate seeing people recommend format and re-install (shows little troubleshooting experience, or laziness... which I am sometimes).... which is somewhat fast, but timely to re-do settings and files.
Go to: [Start] > [Run] > type [Regedit]
- go to his registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot -
You could try uninstalling the drivers and see what happens, and then the first 2 doors it could possibly save 3 for a later day.
-
Well, I know I am lazy, so I would go for the simplest known to work solution. Of course if I have more time I'll do trouble shooting, search on google and on and on, but sometimes the easiest and obvious is all I have. But hey, if you have a better solution, go ahead and post it, at least they're trying to suggest something. Something's better than nothing. Don't be hating.
-
that will show fast that it is a windows prob, or a hardware prob.
I suggested it cuz he said he recently installed xp, so he prob doesn't have a lifetimes worth of $hit on it.

go to Control Panel
- System Properties
- Device Manager
- under IDE ATA Controllers > right-click on [Secondary IDE Channel]
-- choose [Uninstall]
- then Restart
This will force windows to re-detect everything on the second IDE channel, including the optical drive -
Try deleting the drivers to see what happens.
-
OK I tried that too. It found and reinstalled all the Secondary IDE controllers on restart, but still no drive.
Is the fact that I can't see the drive in the BIOS an indication that the drive itself is possibly bad. I'm no technician, but it seems that I should be able to see the drive in the BIOS whether windows can find it or not.
What I'm getting at is that I don't see how a reformat or a windows reinstall would make the drive show up in the BIOS.
Let me know if you think there is something else I can try. -
re-seat the optical drive.
remove it and securely place it back in. -
-
Reinstalling in windows if you can't see it in BIOS would do nothing. If it doesn't show in your bios, windows is SOL. I agree that you should remove it and reseat it. That might work...it could be a loose cable internally also. You should really talk to whomever you bought it from to ensure that it's okay to open it up. They may have a problem with it. You'll more than likely have to RMA the drive back to them.
-
exactly.
Reinstall of Windows is useless if the optical drive does not show up in the BIOS.... so he will need to re-seat and re-secure the drive to make sure that the BIOS sees it. -
Ditto, remove and re-install. If that doesn't work try door #3.
-
Well, I re-seated the drive with no results. The BIOS still isn't seeing it. The drive is getting power (the LED works and it pops open), but it seems to me that it may be the problem.
I guess I'll call Xotic tomorrow and find out if their customer support is as great as I've heard.
Thanks a lot. Especially to Gophn!
btw, I'm guessing that this isn't a common issue for the NP9261 as no one has said anything like that. -
In the last six months I have been hanging out here this is the first I have seen. XOTIC support is as good as you have heard I have used it.
-
XoticPC will probably cross-ship you a new optical drive... so you would not have to send the whole system back.
-
i've had this happen to my laptop a few times, and being no technician, I just whack it, and it seems to work after that....
