My laptop has run fine for 1+ years but suddenly its heating up a lot when playing games, movies, or doing some heavy processing. When my core temps hit 70+ my computer starts to bog down and gets choopy. I have been using the same cooler (stock from XoticPC) for the entire time. Why would this only be happening now. Even upping the fan speed Fn+1 can not contain it. What could have suddenly caused my temps to be a lot higher?

Have you popped the back and cleaned the fans?

Also may need to redo the termal paste if cleaning out the fans doesnt work..

Out of interest, if you reboot, does windows take an age boot ? Sounds like a problem I have that only happens once in a blue moon.. everytime I have checked the temps they were fine, but it only ever happened at times when im not checking lol.

I would try cleaning the fans first before the paste - there is guide here somewhere you can follow.. and yes use compressed air.

Have a quick look at the vents on the back and see if you can if they are full of dust.

Here is a good instruction manual from Gophn

    ======================================================
there really is no general guide because each notebook is different.

    For Clevo's its easy:
    1) remove battery
    2) remove/unscrew the panels on the bottom of the notebook to get to fans and vents
    3) use flashlight to look through vents for the dust
    4) go outside, get some compressed air (cans or basic compressor @ 100PSI or less) and give the vents a good airing out all directions (concentrating on the fans and vents)
    5) go get some Q-tips and swab the fan blades and the area around it
    6) then go do a second airing with compressed air (all directions again focusing on the fans and vents) to push out the dust that was dislodged from the Q-tips

7*) Now go use the flashlight again and look through the vents (shine the flashlight from the fan, you look through the other end) for anymore dust clogs.

    8) Then start up the notebook... and let the fans cycle up (use the Fan Toggle at max speed) to push out any other dust that might have been stuck.

If all goes well you should be able to close up the notebook and...

    you're done.

*repeat this step until its cleaned out.

    Thats pretty much it.

Just make sure to do this every two-three months... it should take about 15-20min per cleaning if you want to be thorough.

if you havnt cleaned out the vent since you got the computer then theres your problem. its recommended to clean out the vent every 3-6 months.

remove battery first. turn upside down and unscrew all the screws around the edge.

edit: beaten to it ^ :)

thanks everyone for your help :)

I opened it up and sprayed an entire can of compressed air into it. Now temperatures are hovering at 43 with the fan running just fine. :)

That must have moved some dirt! I hope you didn't blow it into the your system.

Every 3-4 months I take apart all heatsinks and fans of my NP 9261 and clean them outside of the laptop. A brush, some cloth and just a touch of alcohol doe the job. I also reapply some arctic silver. Costs me about one hour!
