    Hi All,
I've been looking for a portable solution for some CPU intensive programs we run. Seems like the Sager NP9262 has the horsepower to do exactly what I need.

    Have a couple of questions:

    1. Does anyone here have any experience with running Redhat Linux Enterprise 5 on the Sager NP9262. I'm not concerned if there currently are not any wireless or bluetooth drivers, or if any specialized buttons on the keyboard do not work.

    2. Reliability/build quality. These laptop will shipped around quite a bit. Additionally, when they are running, they will be running 24/7 for a few weeks at a time under fairly cpu intensive conditions. Would you recommend this laptop?

    Thanks for reading.

    NOOOOOO!!!

RedHat only will support you if you run their certified hardware, this goes if you got the software through HP/Dell/IBM as well.

So get a laptop from HP/Dell or there is NO need to run RedHat on it, as :

1: You're paying for the extra update/disk in terms of support and you can't get support! ( their website and support agreement will tell you this)

2: You can run CentOS as it's 99.9% the same and the differences are documented and trust me they will not affect you, and by the way Oracle, yes Oracle used, have not checked in a while used CentOS as their base for the RedHat cheap solution..

I could bet kubuntu will work flawlessly with this laptop or, if there is anything missing now it will be up and running in no time :). Easy to install and manage too :).

    Thanks for the reply guys.

Kubuntu/Centos/whatever other flavor is nice, but I need to know if anyone has had any major issues with running Redhat. I seriously doubt there is, but wanted to ask.

Any other comments regarding hardware reliability would be appreciated as well.

    cheers,
    ttac

Well I don't do any CAD work or intensive apps. mostly use it for gaming, but I am on it gaming + surfing for 6-7 hours daily with no problems but it's only been about 3-4 weeks.
This thing uses high quality parts all around, very sturdy, very good cooling( I did get a NZXT Cryo cooler just to play it safe)I would buy this laptop again in a heartbeat!

Why??? you're barking up a tree, this is like asking someone to tell you in 30 min, what the TCO of an ERP is. Or that you want a CRM system ( 30 modules)

What you should be asking, what HW will RedHat run?

You are asking for something that you pay money for, to install on something unsupported, that's like throwing money out the window.

The ability to ask the right question is more than half the battle of finding the answer. Quote by Thomas J. Watson

Maceto, please don't hijack a topic that contains 2 straightforward and easily answerable questions. You are not privy to the Linux operating system requirements where I work. I mean really dude, chill out, it's nothing to get so worked up over.

For anyone else, please refer to questions in the original post. I certainly appreciate any relevant input.

    cheers,
    ttac

Kubuntu will, but RHEL will have limited wireless, etc...but he's not concerned with that anyway...Linux should be no problem with the hardware I've seen in the 9262.

hehe but I know RedHat as I "work with them" I do not want to go into more details that that, but let's just say that I know this for a fact, unless you are one of the largest investment banks or a nuclear power plant, RedHat do not allow special deals, as to run unsupported HW.

    answering question 2:

its the best laptop out there (best in terms of power). quad 3.0Ghz :)
oh and.. shouldn't have problems running it 24/7.. just ensure the temp is fine..

however, if you din't need it to ship around, i'd definitely recommend a desktop for 24/7 under stress. but this is the closest thing you can get to a desktop in our laptop world.. i sometimes leave mine on 24/7.. but its not under max stress..
