So I bought a NP9262 about 3.5 years ago. It's had this video issue for most of the time I've owned it that caused the screen to blank out and go white, and I would have to shut and reopen the lid to get the image back. A few weeks ago, I finally lost all video output to both the screen and the DVI port. I can tell that the screen is still getting power because I can see the backlight bleed through when I power the computer on, and I know that it is booting successfully because I can hear the Windows startup noises, but I get no video (just black screen). I called xotic, but their only suggestion was reseating the GPU, which I did, but no go there. Do any of you have any suggestions?

sounds like it could well be a dead graphics card but the majority of us had vertical white lines down it but as its affecting your external screen as well then theres not much you can do but replace it with a 280 gpu if you can find one. (there might be other gpu options out there but these are the only 2 i know)

my 9800GT died over a year ago and was replaced with a 260gtx but im not sure if they fit n the 9262

I'd have to agree with MrDJ. If the external output isn't working either, then it's more than likely that your GPU is dead.

But if the GPU is dead, how can it successfully POST? I was kind of thinking this would be the case, but I was hoping I could at least eak another few months out of the machine before buying a new one...

The symptoms you listed are well known with the 8xxx series GPU's (and some 9xxx models). If you can't get it working with normal troubleshooting, you could attempt to bake the card and reflow the solder. Here are some links:

Oh, it's that problem. Fantastic. I remember reading about that years ago, I was happy I missed the bullet. Oh well. :)

as far as i know from feedback over the years 99% of the people that baked their card had a happy ending be it one month,6months and even over a year of normal use again.
except for the one that posted on here asking for help as his microwave blew up after baking his card DOH!
