Like that title says, is it possible and if so, not incredibly difficult to get rid of my 9800m GTX and get something new? Thanks.

you can get a single GTX 280 but not SLI 280...

The best you can get is 2 9800M GTX in SLI

or the single 280 with a 8800m gtx or 9800m gtx as physx card, that would be very helpful in games that support physx

I would suggest keeping your 9800m GTX, but moving it to the secondary GPU slot, and then buying a newer card (GTX 280m or GTX 285m) for the primary slot. Then, as stated above, use the 28xM as the primary GPU for rendering, and the 9800m GTX for PhysX/CUDA.
