I have decided to replace my P157SM that was stolen with a NP9752 or NP9752-S. My questions are - should I get a NP9752 so I can get 2x 120GB M.2 SSDs and RAID them? You cannot get 2 of those drives in the S model - it wants you to start with a 500GB SSD. I cannot afford to get 2 of the 500GB M.2 drives. Is there that much of a performance increase by RAID'ing those drives?
How about the 4k display? Is it really worth the price? I am thinking Samsung over Sharp because I don't really care for Sharp after some bad experiences.
Is it worth upgrading to the 4790K from the 4790? How about the 970m to the 980m?

1 - A single 500GB SSD would probably be better than two 120GB SSDs in RAID + you'd have your slot open for later adding of drives. Most of the performance you gain will be lost via RAM or CPU bottlenecks if you're studying gaming benefits. Just pick a good single SSD and enjoy the better size.
2 - 4K is not about being worth the price; it's about whether you feel like it or not. It's big, but you'll have to turn down game settings to play them well at 4K. Up to you if it's worth the screen real estate.
3 - The 4790K is fully unlocked, which means you can adjust whatever you want in it. In that case it's superior to the 4790 or the 4790S, even if you want to underclock/undervolt. Up to you if it's worth the money. The 980M is better than the 970M by about 30%. Up to you if you want the gaming power; but I'd heavily suggest it if going for 4K -
Thank you very much! I haven't really kept up with hardware the last few years so I wasn't certain what was worth it or not.
I will be placing an order later this week. -

4K is neat, but Windows suffers some scaling issues with it. As nice as it is for the enthusiast, it's up to whether you want (let alone, need) those kind of resolutions. The 4K displays look great, for what it's worth, but the 1080p displays look very good still, to be fair.
Both chip upgrades are dependent on your wants, needs, and whims. There's noticeable performance potential between the 970M and 980M. Between the 4790 and 4790K, again, the K version touts a noticeably faster clock rate, but whether that different is really something you think you'll want or need is up to you to figure out. -
Given these laptops are so customizable. I would get the 17' np9772. Same price as the np9752. Select the i5-4690k. And the 980m. And you have a $1900 ($1800 for some resellers)barebones beast You can keep adding to. And upgrading.
If you are like me. you have ram sticks. HD and ssd lying all over. Or buy on Amazon or eBay it's alot cheaper.
RAM: 8GB ram is fine for gaming. Unless you are RAMDriving to save on SSD life. can choose lower latency and lower voltages. To maximize battery and performance.
CPU: These are desktop CPUs. The i5 uses less power and saves you $100.
Display: The FHD is a IPS matte this is good for indoors and outdoors. And awesome for gaming.
The UHD are glossy. And have high lag. lights will reflect so really bad for out doors and not good for FPS gaming. Great for pictures and artwork.
GPU: The 970m is awesome. And uses less power and generates less heat.
The 980m blows it and every other mobile gaming gpu out of water without a doubt.
Hard drives: Samsung ssd's nothing else even comes close.
Micron/crucial isnt bad. But for a boot why not use a xp941. And an eco ssd with that 1tb as an external.Last edited: Feb 22, 2015 -

If you're going for gaming I'd go with the 1080p screen and put the saved money towards a 4K screen. You will see a better return in performance by doing that. If doing graphic work or photo editing then the 970M and 4K screen are a great combo.

And as for CPUs. The i5-4690k is tops for gaming.
If you not gonna bother with overclocking some offer a i5-4460. Which is still a great cpu for games.
Lastly the i7-4790k is generally overkill for gaming(not many games utilize 4cores. So 8 is overkill and better for workloads and multitasking). -

With DX12 you will likely find in future that more cores will start to help out a bit.
NP9752 or NP9752S suggestions desired
