So I've been checking out Xotic PC and Sager's website and they're showcasing these NP9870 and
    NP9870-S laptops.

Looking at the specs they seem to be almost exactly the same except I think the NP9870 uses Optimus technology with their GPU while the S is "VR Ready". Other than that is there any other differences between them? Which would you consider to be a better buy? Thanks!

The Sager "-S" models come with popular features as standard that would otherwise be extra-cost options. The machines have the same form factors. The 9870-S has the desktop-class GTX 980 GPU instead of the 980M like on the standard version. It also has a 256 GB SSD plus a 1 TB hard drive instead of just the hard drive. The S is a really nice package for the price.

Wow thanks for the info!! I'm itching to get the S model then but I better invest in getting a car first! XD Once that's all set the 9870 is definitely going to be my next target. Since it's using a desktop-class GPU does that mean that I can swap the GPU out later on?

Both the 980 and 980M are modular, so yes: you can remove them. Whether you can upgrade with a future card or not will depend on changes in firmware and form factor.

Screen types, SSDs and memory can all be bundled in and can change over time so it's worth having a look :)

The offers for other upgrades can still apply too which is nice.

yep, all they had to do for mine was install OS and change the ram. works well though the keyboard is less swag [much less lighting] than the MSI / alienware ones. but overall nicer quality and smarter... none of that bs msi hybrid power thing. ugh.

Also, just in general, the -S models will almost always have IC Diamond thermal compund, where the standard ones won't, and usually they will have a 30 day dead pixel warranty.
