I checked all the nVidia listings for 9700m GT and above when they accidentally had it on their website but I don't remember the specific info (SPs and Gigaflops)

Well they are above, someone else saw them when they were up and posted it earlier in this thread. I don't know about the GTS though. I think someone mentioned it had 64 SP's.

buying the 8800gtx sli now is a waste of money?

To be quite honest, I think waiting is pretty much always pointless. No matter what you do, there will be a new model just on the horizon. Just the way it is. Just my (really pretty much never) humble opinion, anyways.

The 8800GTX is the best bet.

    Powerful, stable, performance card. :D

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade because I am excited about the prospect of a laptop with a 9800 as anyone.

BUT I would expect about 2 month delays on the release, and then another month until the drivers are refined, and maybe another month until SLI configuration is sorted out. What the 8800s have going for them is that they're pretty rock solid, and I think the 9800s are the incremental step where they start pushing the technology -- they start improving the manufacturing process, cramming on more memory, tweaking speeds, etc. From the point of view of the consumer, that's not always a painless process... especially with the price tag thats going to incur.

I personally considered waiting for the 9800s to buy a laptop, but after looking into it a bit, especially from the historic perspective of card releases, I think 8800s are a great buy right now if someone is looking to pick up a machine. Because remember, when the 9800s are released everyone will be talking about the NEXT gen cards which I'm sure will not just be incremental, but a real innovation. And then you will just want to wait for those, etc.

seems to me that the biggest leap was between the 8700 and the 8800, in terms of performance and capability. The 9800 doesn't seem as revolutionary or ground breaking over previous technology as the 8800 was.

    According to this: http://www.techfuzz.com/roadmaps/2008.aspx

The 9800GTX is just an 8800GTX core that is overclocked with more mem. So it shouldnt be anything 100% revolutionary, although it will be an improvement.

Still, an upgrade I guess. That`d make it less expensive I hope.

It will, based on the consideration that only PCMW and Eurocom will eventually put it in their m860TU's due to the thermal budget when Sager resellers will be staying at the 8800GTX until further notice, then yes, its going to generate more heat.

Yeah sorry if that was unclear, I meant that it would have more heat and would NOT produce less. Some people were speculating that it was a die shrink and that it might produce less heat and be better etc etc. But according to that source it isnt a die shrink, so it shouldnt be expected to be cooler.

They're only offering the 8800GTX and the HD3870 now. If the 9800GTX generates more heat, how does the HD3870 compare? (since it's a different company). I'm a lot more interested in the ATI GPU now. AMD and ATI have established a better reputation in recent weeks...
