Hello everyone, it's been a while since I last posted on the forums, been extremely busy working.
I have migrated onto windows 8 from a windows 7 build.
the reason for this was:
In windows 7 I had recalled my memory having a problem, the speed of the stick went from 800Mhz to 665.4Mhz
now I am on windows 8 and have updated all the drivers to the win8 versions, BUT my memory will not return to 800Mhz. I've attached a speccy screenshot of this. My system config is in my sig

Is there a solution to this? it only started creeping up on me last month. Windows 8 is faster than windows 7 on the other hand for my video edits etc, but when I compile and do heavy renders I really miss the speed of those RAM sticks. Even on windows 7 I benched a project I did a while back when I still had 800Mhz speed was around 10minutes to render. Now, the exact same file, on windows 7 and 8 both take 13~15minutes to render![]()
Any suggestions welcome

download hwinfo64 from my sig below and run that to see if it matches up with what pinfori says. never seen that software before so best to use one that everyone else uses and compare.
mine shows as 800mhz on both 8gb sticks -

Check the RAM settings in your BIOS (not sure if you can make adjustments in yours). I had a system that, when set to automatic for the DRAM frequency setting - would pick up DDR 400 memory as 333 MHz. You might have a similar issue.

thanks for the reply guys
here is the info from HWinfo per request by MrDJ.
@Prostar, there is no way to configure the RAM via BIOS

It could be your Sandy Bridge CPU or your type of RAM.
Sandy Bridge natively supports maximum 2peices of 1600HMz memory with JEDEC memory standards profile, which it will work on NP8170, NP8150, NP8130. With 2x DIMM max when paired with one of supported processor.
The models you have listed appear to be JEDEC. Take out two of them so you only have 2 installed and see if you get the 800Mhz speed.
You need Intel XMP RAM to get all 4 DIMMS at 800Mhz. -

Yeah it would have been smarts for me to have asked whether this occurred after making any changes to physical memory population or not. Thanks Hutsady.

OK, back home now and have decided to open her up. I pulled 2 sticks out and booted the system up. speed is 798Mhz. I'm stomped, what could have changed in the system to cause it going half speed? I sure and certain it was all 800 on sticks as I've checked when I first got the system from myth way back last year. The only thing I can remember is the system is starting to overheat, CPU temps hitting 85C and I've got some BSODs both on Win7 and Win8 due to high temps, this all started a month back from now, I checked the system specs again and it was then that I had noticed the halfed RAM speeds, once I cleaned out the fans and vents of the system, the temps have started to go down to about 73C but still that's high. I'm going to redo the thermal paste on the processor. But I want that RAM speed back
it's really crucial for my video and 3D renders.
here is the info:

also get a can of compressed air to blow the vents and fans out as a build up of dust will sure push up the temps.
you could also download who crashed from my sig below for the bsod dump files.
the reps above have totally lot me on the ram, way too technical for me
hope it gets sorted for you soon
edit
just a thought. have you ever overclocked or underclocked before. -

Might be time to grab thaiphoon burner and add in some XMP profiles.
Good thing is XMP profiles are pretty safe to edit. -
@Meaker would the demo version of thaiphoon let me implement the XMP profiles? I have it on the system, and if yes what would be the proper configuration timings for these Patriot PC3-12800 be? I'm eager to try it out

The demo can't write no
The other option is grabbing a 3720qm.... -
I tested the demo and apart from flashing the eeprom I can effectively use XMP enhancer I've tried to jot down some values and enabled the profile 1 only on 1 ram module and hit apply and it wrote
wonder where to get the profile templates that the source site is talking about since, their tutorial in there is pictured differently from the current version I have -

You can read your current SPD and just use that.
-
Ok will try it out right now. Will I need to shutdown and reboot in order for the PC to pick up the xmp profile afterwards?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Possibly would work but I would restart just to be safe.
-
I edited all the values and wrote them into RAM (or at least I think I wrote them) but the system didn't pick them up upon reboot.
when I reopened thaiphoon the profiles weren't there, I guess he simulated the writes and not done them physically too bad we can't paypal over heregonna look for another way since I don't have the full version of this fine app. Thanks for helping Meaker

Are the temps you listed those conveyed while under load? Or is that idle temps? If under load, 85 C isn't really overheating territory.
-
1) Run Thaiphoon Burner program and click on the Browser button to call SPD Browser;
2) Click on the Download button to download the latest SPD database;
3) From the Query main menu select XMP Extended SPD firmware;
4) Select any desired SPD dump from the filtered list and click on it to view the SPD report;
5) Now the Open Dump button is enabled. Click on it to load the dump into the HEX Editor;
6) Call SPD Enhancer Professional by clicking on the XMPE button on the main toolbar;
7) From the Templates main menu select XMP Templates -> Add to Templates;
8) Finally, enter any name for the extracted profile which will be available under the Templates menu. -
Yea I saw the profiles, thanks
but my problem is my version is the demo version, they don't take malagasy currency for payment so I SOL
guess I'd need to give the 2860QM up for a new processor that accepts 4 stick in 800Mhz, I still don't get why I lost that functionality on this PC, it was there before I did the updates from windows

They take paypal.
NYX1712 (P170EM) 665.4Mhz memory speed instead of 800Mhz
