    Hello,
The LCD on my NP8690 LCD. I am looking into replacing it (about $200 for a Micro Express version), but wonder if it could be worthwhile to part out the old laptop and buy a new one. Everything on it is still good, just the screen is broken. It is in great shape.

The obvious answer is it isn't worth it, but I still thought I'd see if anyone can sway me in either direction. I haven't found a lot of Sager / Clevo parts for sale (outside of retailers), so it is hard to tell how much I could get for them.

    Thanks,
    Jason

It's dangerous to sell a laptop in a non-working state. If the LCD doesn't come on, for all you know, the buyer could assume you may be lying about other stuff not working or you're too dumb to realize the LCD isn't the only problem.

Moreover, someone who does believe you and has the skill to fix it will expect to get quite a discount for buying a non-working computer.

Some parts may be advantageous to sell, but it's likely that very few of them are. You have to remember that resellers also sell spare parts, so you'll be in competition with them.

I think it makes sense to do the repair yourself if you feel comfortable and then sell the machine, assuming the costs of the repair doesn't exceed 25% or 30% of the expected selling price or so.

Sorry... to be clear... I am using the laptop now via Remote Desktop and have also hooked it up to my TV. It works fine, except for the LCD.

I would not sell it in one piece; I'd sell the parts individually in the hopes I could get a bit more money.

    I figured I could sell:
    Processor (i5-540M)
    Video (GTX 285M)
    Keyboard
Touchpad (? i think i've heard of people doing this)
    Motherboard
    CD / DVD burner
    Fans
    Case
    Battery
    Power supply

I would fix the LCD, upgrade the CPU to i7-920XM ES and continue to use it.

If you want a "much better" laptop you are looking at 2800+$ configs, or you
will not have a worthy upgrade for the money.
Plus, you have an Express Card port with a decent upgrade path for new ports
such as Thunderbolt (Light Peak) not available to the current generation of laptops.

Would a Micro Express LCD be the same as a Sager? Specifically, this one?

I need a glossy 1920x1080. This is the only one I can find.

It may be worth it if your willing to resell it. I've seen similar spec laptop go from $600 to $1000+ on ebay. It's hard to part out a laptop, unlike a desktop. I think if your going to sell it, sell it as a whole item. Once you replace the screen you can still keep it for a while, before selling it off, kind of gives you more options on what you want to do as well.

BTW: just curious, how did it die on you?

    Ouch!

Really there is nothing wrong with the laptop other than the screen, get it fixed.

You would still take a big hit even parting it out, with the possibly higher risk of more transactions going bad.

If you parted it out here at NBR your going to have to expect smart buyers that will know what each part is worth, with Ebay you may be able to get a little more. You need to ask yourself is it worth the added trouble?
