To get the ball rolling, I would like a 3D Mark Vantage score on a mostly stock (because I don't like running my systems too hot or crazy OC'd) p150hm with the specs I'm considering in the title (GPU & System).

Next, if you want to stick around for the theory & discussion...

I really like being having a mobile system. I always said to myself, I cared more about this than max details on a game... so long as I can play it. Well, I apparently lied :D I'm finding just too much detail (for my tastes) seems to be compromised with my current system. At my current point in life, game time isn't what it used to be, but I just can't shake the upgrade-itis when I DO sit down to play...

    What I currently have:
    NP8130 i7-2630QM, GTX560m

    What I'm considering:
    NP8150 i7-2760QM, 6990m

    Or for a similar budget:
ASUS PCI3.0/Ivy Ready MB, i5-2500K, GTX 560Ti (some 448 or overclocked version) and keep my NP8130 for my mobile times

    Where it gets tricky:
According to PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End, the mobile processor actually outperforms the desktop one? Clearly not for gaming performance & considerations though, right?

And, since we know CPU has less of a bearing on framerate anyway than GPU, let's look at those, according to 3D Mark Vantage GPU Scores:
    AMD Radeon HD 6990M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

    • GTX560m: 8001.2
    • 6990m: 13341
    • GTX 470M SLI: 16233
    • ---- the GTX 560 TI desktop is placed on their list on the right ----
    • 6970m Crossfire: 20547

So, if we had to guess... where's the Desktop 560Ti fall in performance according to this site? 18500ish? About 20-25% better?

    What's that again?
PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards

Score of: 2976 vs. 2610? About 20-25% better?

So I wash on the CPU and a marginal GPU improvement for giving up the mobility that I love?

Do you happen to play either of these games? Have more thoughts?
    • Haven't play it extensively, but Skyrim had to be taken down to 1600x900 and still couldn't max settings. But, I haven't tried again since the new Nvidia update.
    • SWTOR: An notorious dog on machines anyway. Maybe waiting for improvements from Bioware & optimization from Nvidia will help get full shadows and AA on?

Sorry for the long post... Hope someone out there has desktop & laptop experiences recently and can help steer me the right way. It's a lot of data.

I'll just go ahead and add to it that I also have in the mix waiting a couple months until the next gen of 22nm from Nvidia (the 700 Series is the good stuff, not the 600 series re-badge) and Ivy Bridge are out... But then again, it'll probably still be a similar question of mobility vs. HOW MUCH more performance, really?

Just upgrade your 560m to 6990m or 580m instead of replacing the whole thing. The 2630qm is still very fine and you are not gaining any fps while gaming, even in hard cpu games like BF3...
Upgrade your gpu is the solution and will be cost effective too if you can sell your 560m !

How do you feel about the 6990m compared to the Desktop GTX560?

Think the numbers I found on these two sites is about right?
    Only a 20% Jump?

Doesn't seem like a whole lot for giving up that mobility I love...

2500K is one of the best overclockable CPUs available on a desktop in terms for price/performance. With overclock it will most likely murder 2760QM. The desktops will always be cheaper and much more powerful with better upgrade options. The only downside to a desktop is that you can't lug it around with you and that's the only reason to get a laptop instead.

For the price of 6990M + 2760QM laptop you can get a desktop with 2500k and either 560Ti SLI or 580. The performance is not even close in comparison.

I recently bought a desktop with Radeon 6970 and 2500k. To be honest I wish to get a lighter laptop now instead of my 7 pound Sager. Heavy gaming laptops are no longer appealing to me with the new lifestyle when I don't have to constantly move. I'm hoping to get LG P330 for gaming on the go, but most of the gaming needs are covered by a desktop.

    Hi there,

Here are my results. compared to what you currently have it will pretty much destroy it. Setup in my sig with comfortable overclocks that can be pushed higher. Compare my GPU score of 16161 with overclocks compared to the 8000 you get stock and its a 50% gain.

Remember though that it also depends on the game itself along with drivers and the different architecture if you are going solely on benchmarks but it is a good 30-40% jump in general performance going on benchmark scores.

6990M over the 580M any day of the week nothing to do with ATI/Nvidia just bang for buck the performance difference is not worth the price.

Thanks for a good system for me to compare to. Wow. You really are on the heels of the Desktop GTX560 (non-TI), crazy.

If I go desktop, I gotta go all out. This is useful, thanks guys who have posted thoughts so far.

It just depends really do you like sitting as a desk or chilling on your bed :D for me I like to be able to chill in bed and play on my laptop and be able to put it away in the draw under the bed and lock it haha ;)

Nothing I have played yet has even pushed the 6990M the thing is a monster I am running BF3 Ultra, HBAO with 4xAA and getting 35-45fps which people say is not possible on a laptop it is with my one :) I was not expecting such a memory overclock mind 144gb/s even I was surpised at from a mobile GPU, it can reach 148gb/s but its not completely stable.
