This is what he configured so far. It's $3868. How do you think about this config. It's still the prive from Xotic without Tax + International Shipping. Does anyone knows about the tax and shipping cost for the UK.
I'm gonna update this with hist budget later, thxs.
Update: His budget is about £2.5k
p/s: I know that running Raid will require identical HDDs, just never mind that mistakes there. He said he doesn't need Raid![]()
BTW, can some1 explain Raid about Raid pls, i read on wiki and it's quite confusing.

You (your friend!) will have to pay 17.5% VAT on the total purchase price including shipping, there is no seperate Import Duty on laptops.
Regds RAID the Clevo 901C supports 0, 1 and 5. The link I usually refer people to is this :
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/levels/comp.htm
which has a useful table directly comparing all RAID configs and is pretty self explanitary. You can also read more about each RAID level here:
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/levels/single.htm
Put simply (ish):
RAID 0 (Striping) splits files between 2 or more HDDs so performance is very good, 2 x 200GB HDDs will give 400GB of storage, if one disk fails you loose eall your data. Highly recommend 3rd drive/external drive for backup!
RAID 1 (Mirroring) mirrors each file two 2 HDDs so one HDD is an exact copy of the other, performance not as good as RAID 0 and in some cases worse than 1 drive (esp write), 2 x 200GB HDDs will give 200GB storage, if 1 disk fails you simply rebuild and don't loose anything
RAID 5 (Striping with parity) a little more complicated but stripes data like RAID 0 and the parity part is a way of distributing the data so if one drive fails it can be re-created from the remaining drives. Requires a minimum of 3 HDDs, read performance is very good, write perf pretty good, 3 x 200GB HDDs give 400GB storage, if 1 disk fails just swap it out and rebuild with no data loss.
RAID 5 can be seen as a good combination of 0 and 1 as it has good performance (like RAID 0), good fault tollerance (like RAID 1) and good storage efficiency (like RAID 0). It will put more stress on the notebook though due to parity calculations on each write action. -
Hello,
Before you buy it try also some european sellers. VAT must bepaid for imported item. Also if you have some problems, even if it is in warranty you still have to pay for the shipping. For my configuration I paid maybe 200-300 euros compared with buying from US, but you do not pay for the shipping costs in case it is needed to send for repairs. I believe you should expect for a trasnport fee of about 250 $. The real price of your laptop after you pay shipping and VAT will be of about 4800$.
Your cheapest option in Europe for a similar (proc q9450 and 2 x7200 rpm hdd) configuration is about 2800 £. This sounds alot more take into account that everytime your laptop has to be sent for repaairs in US there is a shipping fee of 200-250 $.
For the 2.5k you can get a q9450 and SLI with one 200 GB 7200 rpm HDD. -

nope there is a uk one and its bugging me what they are called, I am note sure if they do the big quad core one though, they were slighly more expensive than novatech
they obviously dont pay Google enough as they dont show up on a uk gaming laptops search -
He knows that there's gonna be hassle when the system have problems, but seems like xotic is the only reseller have custom paintjob.
Edit: I checked Kobalt, they also have custom paint job, too.
@Neil: is it possible to paint it with a custom image and is there any discount for students?
@Justin: What is the shipping cost of Xotic or international Order? -
Neil@Kobalt Company Representative
Hi
About half of the 901C (Comanche) chassis we are selling atm are painted and we also have full custom options on the website. Also see this months PC Format magazine for a custom painted 571RU-U review (Mojave XI) and lots more to come -
