    Yup, I am a n00b sorry..

see here is the thing, my dad is getting me a laptop of my choice aslong as I pitch in some cash myself as a grad gift.

I have been looking up MSI and Asus, but as of recent I have been so swarmed with "what do I choose"

I came across the Sager NP8662 and instantly fell in love.

With my own customization, I can get a VERY good graphics card, great processor, and a perfect HDD.

The price is $1472 in total, and though the price is way steepier then the original $750 I was gonna pay on the G50VT-X1 Refurb, then later changed to G51 That just released, its overall I feel a better deal..due to the fact that since it comes with a better video card then the X1 and will be new instead of refurb, and then its got a better processor compared to the one the G51 has (especially since the G51 has heating issues)

So I ask, is Sager a good reliable brand? I see they rebrand or whatever Clevo, so I dont know what I should be asking but whatever... :p

    Is Sager/Clevo good reliable hardware?

And is this site reliable: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8662-built-clevo-m860tu-p-2564.html?wconfigure=yes

    Thanks in advance!

please read the Clevo Guide if you haven't yet. ;)

You will find that you actually know Clevo notebooks.... from other famous vendors that re-brand their systems... Alienware, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, etc..

Clevo has been around longer than Dell and other OEMs have even existed.

And for the new skeptics... make sure to look up the BBB (Better Business Bureau) records of some of those vendors... like XoticPC and PowerNotebooks

... then compare that to known "big brands" .... you will be surprised.

I am tempted to write , "Nope, the 5000+ people who post in this forum are all foolish and waste their money on crap brands" but that's only because I am very tired.

Clevo makes some of the best laptops for the best price of any ODM, and Sager ( the OEM) slaps their name on it.

A lot of boutique brands take Clevos and charge you a couple thousand more for them. Resellers like Xoticpc and Powernotebooks sell them for probably a dime over cost and then bend over backwards to give support so good that you sit there for the next three years wondering how they can stay in business

Thanks you just freaked me out :p

Well isnt that what warranty is for? :)

And as many posters here have said, Xotic is a great site to work with.

Alright guys didn't know just how unknown but yet so known the Clevo PC's are.

    :)

BTW My only upgrades on the 8662 is the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and the HDD from 250GB 5400rpm to 320GB 7200rpm.

Will my B router be found with the wireless card inside this laptop or do I need to upgrade and get that router with the laptop?

Okay so I DON'T need to upgrade?

Because someone who "knows" WiFi said my Router wouldnt be compatible...

But honestly, I trust anyone on this forum far more! So no need to update then...

I wondered a lot of things about Clevo and Sager, and their resellers (PNB, XoticPC, etc.) and how they stay in business myself. I also like how it seems Sager gets the pick of the performance goodies while other companies use "cooled down" components (think GTX 260m = hot, 9600m gs = cool). Meanwhile, companies such as Dell/Alienware, HP, etc. (excepting ASUS, they build their own in-house) take their names, slap on the logo, add some "value-added" bloatware, and charge an extra $500 to $1000 for what? a pretty logo, bloatware and "middle-of-the-road" to "bottom-barrel" customer service? It's absurd! As far as sager's bigger resellers, I'm not sure myself how they manage to stay in business. When I compared the price of the np8662 on sager's site, to the np8662 on PowerNotebooks, with identical configuring, the np8662 on PNB was $70 less. I'm still stupefied as to how the small resellers do it... oh well, as long as they have good service, are reliable, and the computers rule, then we're doing well.

On a more serious note, I've heard the intel matrix manager helps with the hard drive heat problem, or just save up and wait for bigger 34nm-based SSDs to come out from Intel, and stick some of those little puppies in, and see how fast vista / win7 decide to wake up and smell the coffeebeans.

And crazybeans, relax... even the standard warranty is better than the warranty on 99% of the standard "bigbox" notebooks out there. If you want, you can call up who you bought it from and ask them to extend the warranty / make it more comprehensive.

I remember when I first stumbled across Sager (clevo) and had the same reservations. No way could this be this good. Eventually pulled the trigger and now whenever I buy or recommend a laptop, Sager is the first place I go or point someone, too (there have been some thinkpads, toughbooks, Compals, one Flextronic-Arima, and one Dell in there--the only complaints thus far were about the Dell).

Now, I have not always bought Sagers, but they are clearly the dominant laptops in those I am responsible for being bought, which is certainly in the hundreds.

They (the resellers) survive mostly on their skill and their wits, but also, in part, because Sager knows who butters its bread, and doesn't try to run its resellers out of business. Also, customer support is not Sager's strong point, but it is with the resellers (the good ones, at least) - it makes for a good division of labor.

    Well, then its settled...

After a good long month of researching as far and as deep as I could, I have finally found the perfect laptop to me.

The ONLY NEGATIVE I could point out, is the lack of a number pad, and that is NOT a big deal to me at all! I never really use the number pad even on PC, so regardless I wouldn't have used it on the laptop.

Go figure, I was so sure I would come out with an ASUS, Its why I had been searching through ASUS forums on here and other sites, and then in one ASUS thread, someone brought up the Sager NP8662 and before you know it, I found the perfect laptop.

Has everything I need, and besides that HDD heating "problem" which seems to have ways to solve it regardless through configs in Vista and getting that Intel Matrix Storage thing, plus I will have a Notebook Cooler :

    ZM-NC2000

Its the perfect size, good processor that I will without a doubt be extremely happy with (vs the 2.26 on the X1, 2.13 on the X5, 2.0 on the new G51) FANTASTIC video card, and the perfect storage and RAM.

And the price isn't horribly killer either which is what is great...the G50VT-X6 costs more on Newegg and has a 9800M GS...

And to boot, its got a nice sleek design, no rouch look, no graphics or designs, just a nice sleek look.

Like I said, I have found what I want!

BTW, THis will be MY first laptop :)

CrazyLink, this HDD heat problem occurs under certain computers under certain OS under certain circumstances under certain users. It's a rare issue. Imagine the people that have bought this system vs people that complain about it in here, for example.

Purchase through powernotebooks or xoticpc. They both have good reputations.

thanks for the clarification shyster1. I had just woken up, so I hadn't thought the bean process through. Sager's smart, they know the resellers make up a good chunk of their revenue, and while their direct CS is "meh", the good resellers have PHENOMENAL support. *Is eagerly awaiting for his laptop to get here*

    Thats true :)

And yep, i plan to buy from xoticpc.

Have ever selected out and read to put in credit card info...Just waiting for the 30th to do so.

When the day comes that I get my laptop, expect me to post a thread asking what a first time laptop owner like me should do, such as something I have heard about cycling the battery or something? I have no idea what that is, lol.

Also, has anyone overclocked this laptop using something like SetFSB?

If so whats the highest you have been able to go without any issues?

    Thanks!

I can't wait to get this thing!

Just to give you a head start, all of the info you could ever want on laptop batteries, and probably more that you really didn't want, can be found at the Battery University (I kid you not, check it out).
