Will there be a new 15-incher lapotp from Clevo anytime soon?

Soon-ish. Some day. Eventually.
-
Generally, Clevo likes to reveal new models/refreshes at CeBIT and other such conferences.

You dont see much "new" models from Sager/Clevo. They do refresh their models around the same time a new chip is released. For example when the first core i came out they did, then again for the second gen core i. You'll see the next one around the time Ivy Bridge is released. The computer designs probably won't change much if any though.
-
Errr there will be a new W series coming out in early January with nVidia GT630 graphics with Optimus. If you sager boys get it or not is probably a different story.
It's supposed to be a big deal because the other OEMS are waiting until Ivy Bridge before they will release the GT6** graphics, this will still be running Sandy Bridge. -
Optimus, that is what I like to hear. That gives me hope the the bigger Clevo range will also have it.
-
I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. a GT630 may or may not be an increment to the GT 520-555m series (which is leagues away from the GTX line). Take for example how the GT 550m still beaten by the GT 445m according to NotebookCheck even though "445" is numerically (both the 1st digit and last 2 digits) lower.
Point is, the current GT line (520-555) has always had Optimus, and the buyer has to basically make the choice between that and performance sans Optimus (GTX) for Clevo machines. So this piece of news gives no evidence of the higher-end models (successors to the 81x0 line) ever getting Optimus.
Keep in mind also that the GT 5xxm line was out for a few months before the GTX 5xxm. Likely you will have to wait even longer for GTX 6xxm if what previous poster said was true about GT 6xxm series. -

Like how long of a wait for the GTX series? -
2012 15" Clevo:
As you can see it sports Windows 8 and also autonomous laser cannons. -
Ooo the laser cannons are a nice touch. Great anti theft device and a much stronger deterrent then a Kensington lock.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Is that even a serious 2012 model?
-
Kensington lock was phased out for plasma injection port to quick charge the lasers anyway.
No, it's just an NP8130/8150/P150HM.
All joke, no substance, was just meant for laughs. -
How long will you be waiting until GTX model new range? At least until March, probably later at this stage.
Ivy bridge has been pushed back until April. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Oh ok. That's a long wait then. So after the release of Ivy Bridge in April, it will still take a couple of months for the mobile versions to be available, right?
-
could be. plus a few weeks to get your machine built and sent to you, June is when you gonna receive it...
-
googled and get
p150em p170em p170em3
gtx680/675/670/660m
gt660m
.... -
No, that's when mobile Ivy Bridge comes out, in April. So by May you should be able to get your laptop.
Only concern is that it's not always smart to get the first batch, I prefer until 1-2 months later so that they iron out any minor bugs. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Understood.
So it's always wise to buy a laptop "when you need it", right? In my case, now? -
I am getting a np8170 next week during black friday! hopefully there are some neat deals to add on to already nice sager/clevo/satori deals!
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
That would be my question also. In history, were there deals during black friday for these laptops?
-
You shouldn't be worrying about that. Many resellers that are active on here have refund policies - if the price gets lower before December 31, you get refunded the difference.
I ordered my laptop from MALIBAL, so I got the deal from them. -
im not sure if switchable graphics will be implemented in the ny clevos. if thats important to you, might be worth a wait although it still isnt clear whether this will be enabled in the ib clevos or not.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Hmmm, I reckon that I only seen this policy with MALIBAL though I'm not quite sure.
Thanks for the info. I'm still contemplating on to purchase now or to wait for IB. IB is a long wait though, probably May as Blacky mentioned. -
Optimus v1.2 is certainly enabled in Ivy Bridge Clevo, this is confirmed.
-
Cant wait for a 3D 15inch 1080p Clevo.

Link? 10char. -
it may be an insider info, not for the public
-
That is correct. I have 'no link' to show, just take my word for it, why would I lie?
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
I wasn't referring to you lying. It would just be better overall if you had a 'link' of some sort. You know how it is in this field
Most of the time even when Intel announces it to the public, it can always change as long as it is not yet hitting the "deadline". Anyway, thanks for the info.
-
Oh sorry, I see how that must have come across.
I have something staring me at the face that says it does, but I guess I can't publish this document, sorry.
Put it this way, Clevo have taken in some of the 'concerns' of the customers on the last series, this is why we are seeing things like backlit keyboard, optimus tech on high end as well. -
Those two things, backlit and optimus, are definitely the two features I wish the Clevo's currently had the most. There's always something better 6 months away though, so at some point you just have to buy, and right now with the price protection it's a great time.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
NO worries.
Optimus isn't working simply because the lack of support of the GPU chips in these high-end Sagers, right?
Do every reseller have price protection up to the end of this year? -
Personally optimus and ssd caching are the things that interest me with Ivybridge.
Is there anything new in the gpu side?

Optimus, I agree. But SSD caching is not worth it, IMO. I have that feature in my Z68 desktop motherboard and it's practically useless if you already use an SSD as your OS drive.
-
I think Nvidia already announced that they will start implementing Optimus on all machines. I was wondering if all Clevo models will include Optimus in the future.
This is bad for Linux as there's virtually no support for that Tech (Yes I know about bumblebee, but come on, something stable)
Perhaps the new models will run at higher FSB and the like to support RAM at higher speeds?
I imagine new features like WIDI will be included. -
All 4xx and 5xx series GPU supported Optimus but it was up to the OEM to implement it. This is awesome news as you will be able to get driver updates straight from nvidia (read AnandTech - Mobile GPU Faceoff: AMD Dynamic Switchable Graphics vs. NVIDIA Optimus Technology for more info).
-
This is a real shame as I really would like to move to Linux full time. Hopefully they will change their position or the OSS community brings something together.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
What exactly is the "awesome news" you were referring to? That Ivy Bridge can now use Optimus? -
I think it's going to be more useful in a mobile setting where you only have limited disk space.
For example you could have a 1tb hdd and a 40 gb ssd and get the benefits of that cache for the 1tb.
To me that certainly is worth it

This is the exact same predicament with the Z68 chipset motherboards for desktops. Some people use it, most people don't. I personally have a 60GB Corsair Force GT SSD and a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD and was planning to utilize SSD caching to it. After reading some reviews, I decided not to because it practically slows down the speed of the SSD by a "bit". You could ask the people in the desktop world and you'll be surprised how many people will advise you that using the SSD as a main OS/apps drive and the HDD as a storage drive is still better.
Again, the use of SSD cache in desktop and mobile platforms are and will be the same. SSD caching and mobility are not related at all
-
Ordering my P170HM 3D today. Biggest reason was no 3D Screen on the 15 inch clevo models. LG has a A530 that has a 15 inch 1080p 3D screen, but only a GT 555 2gig video card. Also it was just released in Korea 2 months ago so you have to get them through e-bay.
-
That's well and good if you use only 60gb of o/a and programs. Me and many people I know use much more. The problem is larger ssds are quite expensive
I'd rather have my programs in a bigger drive with my most commonly used programs cached in a smaller ssd.
This is also more important in a mobile environment where you're basically limited to two disks in a 15 incher. Sure I may lose a little performance compared to a dedicated ssd but who cares

That's why it always depends on the user. But my main point here is that being mobile (using a laptop) doesn't make a difference than using a desktop when it comes to using SSD cache (Intel Smart Response Technology).
