Well it seems both systems are pretty comparable to each other. The small differences might make up the cost difference.
I am surprised that Toshiba has priced it out that low, but I guess they are breaking into new territory (... high-end mobile gaming) and needs some attention with a deal.![]()
I think it would be even nicer if Toshiba actually ships this new gaming notebook with no bloatware... but that might just be a pipedream.![]()
We shall see how it turns out.

I saw the lower end X305 at the Longmont store today. It's not a bad machine, but certainly screams gamer when you see it. The X305 has a good standard keyboard layout with full number pad. It's nice to see that as the smaller number pad on the NP5796 is kind of a downside to me. However the sager wins in the screen department. Not only was the 1440x900 screen too low of a resolution but it was also grainy and had far too warm of a white balance. Bletch.
-
I guess the Toshiba will have better speakers than the Sager ?
-
1440x900 on a 17 inch? Ugh. I can't imagine how that looks.
Also, I wish it wasn't such an obnoxious color. Does it come in black? -
Yeah... the resolution on the Toshiba SUCKS! I can't go back from my WUXGA right now....
-
The resolution aside, I've never gotten decent tech support from Toshiba and trying to get anything resolved at Best Buy without having to use the word "chargeback" has never happened for me.
Edit: Wow, that's one hiddeous notebook. -
-
The Toshiba has to many bright colors, when you look inside it looks like a water painting design.
-
i hope this can help prices to go down even more
-
I saw the lower end one (the one with the 9700) in a Best Buy and the colours and design just overloaded my brain. It's just too much.
-
My XPS is not bad either, good strong crisp volume and there is actually some bass. L)
-
that's my next toy right there, waiting for 1680x1050
-
But if you think about it if you are planning on upgrading the laptop at all it would be more expensive to buy the toshiba. If you want say the P9500 thats another $300, 320 7200 HD $180, better screen, $150, 2 more gigs of ram $80. Thats quite a bit more, whereas for the sager you dont pay the full price for upgrades.
-
I ve went to bestbuy today and I had my 5min with the x305 and as the pricing seems fine the quality not. I know that everyone has their own taste but this laptop is ugly from every angle. I was walking around it and honestly I could not find an angle that this laptop looks good from. Maybe from underneath. Next is the quality of the plastics. They seems very flexy and cheap. Its something totally opposite the word "premium". So if u re low on cash the X305 might do for u, If u want to be a human being u ll spend a little more for a sager or xps
-
-
That is one nice looking laptop! The speakers on it are probably amazing too.
This is a Qosmio right and not the X305? Wouldn't it have better build quality being a Qosmio?
We have to wait for reviews to come out but initially if you like the flare and are an audophile this is probably better than the 5796. But full reviews will tell us more. -
^^^this is Qosmio X305

One thing I noticed...wouldn't putting your left hand on the WASD keys cover that speaker on the left palmrest? (if that is a speaker there)
-
^^^you will, and this is not the first time toshiba doing this.
-
Am I reading this correctly? That there are two hard drives or just two partitions?
320GB SATA hard drive (2 x 160GB; 7200 rpm) -
it's 2 HDDs.
-
2 hard drives, Toshiba loves the 2HD config so later on u can put your own larger hdds
-
But its still ugly, awful dvd playa (Toshiba always uses the mat**** dvd burners or whatever is their name), the processor is going to be a bottleneck for the GPU, quality is awful, support is even worser, I like the res, but Toshiba LCD has always at leats 12450ms time response. U re better off spending the extra $100 on a sager.
-
Thats true.
The main downside I see about the Toshiba is the lackluster low resolution screen for such a great gaming setup and the software (only Vista option and A LOT of bloatware).
The aesthetics are a bit flashy, but thats very subjective.
I care about bang for the buck, and the Toshiba looks promising... but a bit flawed on customizations. -
-
that paint job is just horrendously gaudy. why dont they make it a simple black with some cool subtle decals or accents... god red with red flame stripes. plus the screen res is low (why couldnt they have done 1680x1050?)...still a good deal though on the level of a sager deal but i doubt the same quality as sager
-
wait until you see it in person, i used to think 5793 looked horrible also.
-
It's like a flashy race car. Some like it, some don`t.
I am ok with it. -
If you could customize it online that would be awesome but if you can't people who would want to customize it wouild spend more money.
-
Wow...That thing is...HIDEOUS!
-
id have to see it in person. the lid is not great but not horrible imo but the red chrome stuff is nasty looking i do really like the lines of it though how the sides have a different look and curve to them like that its pretty cool that thing would have looked sick i think in a glossy black and silver finish..and heck thats a killer deal for what it comes with. i might have grabbed one if i didnt buy the dell

I saw it in person as well. Thats where my impressions came from. I thought it looked better online.

So my question is: If your gonna use an external monitor for gaming, would the Toshiba be better than the np8660 that's almost fully loaded?

The other one you might want to check out at Best Buy when you're there from a purely price standpoint is the Gateway P-6860FX. It has an 8800 GPU (which we now know is equivalent to the 9800), and some lessor components, but it carries a much lessor price tag too: $1,349. It could be a viable option for many people without the cold hard for a maxed out system yet still provide some decent gaming performance.
-
The p-FX was and still is the best bang for the buck now.
I`m curios if their newer iteration will live up to the challenge, release date, after mid august. -
-
The 8800M GTS is still almost twice as fast as a 7950GTX, which can still game nicely.
So if you want high details, and don`t want to pay the premium, the 8800M GTS is the best choice right now. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
YESSS!!!! i am for sure going for one of the toshiba's, probably the X702. i was looking at the X701 thats alot cheaper, but i really want a 9800M GTX. i live in canada so i have to wait until mid august for it to come out, but im not getting it until september anyways.
the only thing i dont like on it is the 2.26GHz processor but its not that big of a deal...
and does anyone have any ratings on either the X701 or X702. their both now available online at bestbuy.com -
Hi all, just wanted to give you a quick heads up on the Qosmio. I ran across this rig while considering the Gateway p6860-fx, yes the BestBuy model. I was considering it for the strong gaming performance, and upgrading the CPU would have made it decent. HOWEVER, after running across the Qosmio I became determined I'd find one. Well, I picked one up on the 16th, after making a 5 hour road trip. Determined, eh? Since, I've been disappointed in the support..but it's expected with being such a new product. Enough complaints, here's the good news. For the money, this is the best mid-level gaming laptop on the market. No questions asked. I spent $1549, and now it's on sale for $150 less at BestBuy through the beginning of next week. The rogue shell design was awful at first, but grew on me quickly. The keyboard is nicely arranged, however the buttons are glossy so they really show fingerprints and smudges. The 1440x900 screen is crisp, and clear.. however doesn't support 1280x1024 so for now PcMark vantage will NOT benchmark. But for 4 Gigs of DDR3 RAM, a smoking video card, decent HDD, 17" monitor..all for $1399, that's a steal. And the new Intel 945 Chipset! 1066 mhz FSB. I mean, why not? I ran 3dMark06 Benchmark, and the screenshots are posted below. For whatever reason, the drivers won't show they're WHQL Certified, and I can't make results public on Orb. But once again, if you're looking for a great bargain on a medium-hardcore gaming rig..the Qosmio is the way to go. You may wanna wait for the 702 though, if this is the entry level model.

Question for you E-wrecked, how do you find the lid? I understand that it's rather flimsy? Do you have any experience with the FX series and if you do, how do they compare?
Also, there's a new iteration of the P6860FX coming out next month. It supposedly comes with a 200 GB 7200RPM 1920 x 1200 4GB DDR3, P8400 and 9800M GTS. -
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
E-Wrecked? how is the cooling?
-
8250 at 1280x800, that's not as good as I'd thought it might be...Don't forget people that this score cannot be directly compared to standard 3dmark scores as it'd have a lower score at the standard 1280x1024.
-
8250 @ 1280x800 doesn't make it the best mid-level 17" gaming notebook on the market. The gateway 6860 scores better 3dmarks and is cheaper.
-
-
). I do notice that the keys are a bit soft, when typing, but respond well. The touchpad mouse kinda sucks, it's textured and doesn't respond well near the top. If you don't like fingerprints, this is not the comp for you. EVERYTHING is glossy.. palm rests, keys, exterior(except bottom), all leave nice streaks
. But that's asthectics.
Compared to the 6860, I assure you that if the processor were upgraded to the x9100, and the fx were maxed at the x9000, it would smoke any processor/gpu setup in the current FX. The 9700m GTS is a better vid card, and the Intel chipset with a 1066 FSB will help, as opposed to hold back, the rest of the system. The qosmio uses DDR3, with higher latency timings.. 7-7-7-21 I believe is what cpu-z said, running at full speed. But, why would you want an old chipset? And the new FX, I assure you, will be much more costly vs. cost/benefit of the tosh. You ever seen a Toshiba tower/desktop? They only make laptops. They should be decent at it by now, right? If you wanna wait for the new FX, so you can get the slower video card, and the same CPU as the x305-q702 go for it. But, why not have a p8400 and 9800m GTX with 4 gigs of DDR3 and 320 gigs that can go RAID, with harman kardon ta' boot? The gateway 6860fx is the OLD bargain gamers notebook, this is the new hotness! And, if you're looking to upgrade ANYTHING, just toss a new screen on the 702 for $250 and you're MAXED out. What else would you need? Maybe a quad-core centrino 2?
There's a guy that I've talked with that loves his fx tho.. his name is Johnksss. Here's the forum he uses for OC'ing and the FX. I'm sure the Tosh will have theirs too once everyone catches on! As a side note, he's got the #1 3dmark06 score, PERIOD for the FX.
1.) Johnksss: Gateway P-6860 FX / 1 x 320GB + 1 x 160GB / 4GB 667mhz ram / X9000 @ 3ghz / 8800m GTS / Vista X86 - 3Dmark06 = 11017

Now, throw the intel xtreme in the Tosh, and get blown away. Anyhow, hope this helps guide y'all. Any other questions, just ask. -
Edit:
BestBuy no longer offers the x305-q702 on their website. It was backordered 2 days ago, sold out yesterday, and not offered today. They've removed it completely, however buy.com offers it but their customer service doesn't have an ETA of when they'll have it in stock. The intel centrino 2 delay has had a ripple effect, combined with the late GTX release. It's like the new EA game Spore, they just keep dragging it out to entice us! Damn you corporate america!
New 9800M GTX notebook - comparable to Clevo M570TU for pricing it seems
