Is it safe to upgrade to a BIOS not posted on the official Sager support site? And why doesn't Sager post these BIOS files in the support section?

They dont make them available to download for everyone as alot on damage can be done if not done properly.

But if they aren't posted on the support section, what is the point of making them? Are they as safe and supported as BIOS updates from other companies? It just seems like some guy in a basement is modding some BIOS files, adding "updates" and making them appear like official BIOS files. If they are not being shared officially then the files should not be official, unless you can give me a statement directly from Clevo/Sager stating that these BIOS files are official and safe.

Also, is there any point in updating? Are there real advantages in the newer updates?

Limited fan control(FN+1) and better battery life( AnandTech - AVADirect Clevo P170EM Part 2: GTX 680M Grudge Match).

But Hutsady, for the 9170s, these are Clevo BIOSes. What about the Sager (I know they are the same, but that thread to which you link explicitly warns against Sager laptops installing Clevo bioses)? Do you feel the same way? Or is there a place to get the Sager version of the .10s?

Hi, I just sent an email to xoticpc yesterday for requesting Bios and EC update, they send me back the latest one for Sager NP9170 today.
I take a look into the files, it seems the Bios version is 1.02.14, and the EC version is 1.02.11.
I'll upload them to my Skydrive, if you like to use them to update your laptop, just download them. ;)

Of coz you can, but do remember flash EC first then Bios, otherwise u probably will brick your machine, because 1.02.xx bios won't work with 1.00.xx EC.
Just download and follow the instructions, nice and easy. ;)

Can I get a CONFIRM that after installing these files, one should get:
    KBC/EC firmware 1.00.11SA
    BIOS revision 1.02.14.LS1

    (for MEFW Version 8.1.0.1248)

I know that BIOS 1.02.xx is not supposed to work with EC 1.00.xx...
... but that's what I got (applying the EC file first, naturally).

    And it's running fine. ?!?!

    Thanks!

Edit: I'm confirming that AFUDOS.exe SEEMS to be running okay, flashing and rewriting my EC. But quick question: the flashec.bat file that comes with these downloads have the command line "AFUDOS ECP170EM.SA /e /x". Shouldn't the "/e" switch be a "/em" switch for flash?

I used to be doubt that after I flashed the ec file and boot into BIOS menu, it shows the ec version is 1.00.11, but I just keep continue flashing the bios files and unplug my AC power connector.
When I pressed the power button, it shows a black screen and auto shut down, I was fxxxing scared by that. 5 secs later, my laptop auto power on and everything runs fine. :D
Now my fan is running so quietly when the machine is not in full load. :pAlso the WinKey and Fn Key are swapped around, I can't tell why Sager remapped these keys but now it looks better for me. (Becoz I took the caps off and swapped them) :D

So, MacFans, are you saying that even after completed the EC and BIOS installs, you had 1.00.11SA for EC? Good. Makes me feel better.

I could be wrong, but I THINK it was only after the EC update that the setup screen that you photographed in your thread even displayed the "HEFw Version 8.1.0.1248" at all. I mean, not just the version, but the very existence of a "HEFw."

    But I could be wrong.

when you turn on your laptop.... press f2 and your bios version will pop up with some other stuff... as to the download, download the files from a couple posts back and follow instructions.
