Good day,
I am looking at replacing my notebook with something bigger and more useful compared to my old 13 inch model.
The new notebook would act as a desktop replacement with the folliwng functions:
1. Photo and video editing (amateur/prosumer)
2. Watching movies
3. Internet etc
4. Work - documents, excel, Corel Draw,etc
Laptop will move around in the house but not for traveling.
Not really for games. Although the odd strategy game can be played...has been years though.
On the one hand these Clevo models (specifically looking at Schenker and Deviltech in Germany) are great value for money and seem to get very good reviews from here. Question is, are there any people here that use them for photo and video editing? I am really only looking at coveirng sRGB mostly with calibration. Not shooting in aRGB at all.
On the other hand many try to convince me to go for the Dell M4600 / Lenovo W520 etc. Which are great computers I am sure, but here I limit myself with screen size and performance compared to the Clevo models. Not to mention built in SSD and HDD for the Clevo. I wrote emails to Schenker and a few other distributors of Clevo, but none are really willing to give specs on the screen. Just saying it should be sufficient for what I want to do with it.
Any help would be appreciated! thanks!

If they offer an upgrade to a 72% NTSC gamut screen you want to get that option. 72% NTSC will be 100% sRGB. Most of the stock screens are a 60% NTSC color gamut so you wont have the full color space of sRGB. If they dont offer any upgrades you'll still be ok, just not as good as it can get for you.

Thanks for the reply!
At the moment there is only the option to go for Gloss or Matte. No 72% NTSC it seems. Pity. -
The screens are either the same or even better than Lenovo and Dell's.
Stock screens (Gloss or Matte) are at 60% sRGB Gamut, which will be good for most people.
If you've never owned a 72% Gamut or above, then you will be happy with these screens that come stock.
Pick Clevo and join the fight for low prices and good performance in the Notebook World! That will force Lenovo and the other "Big Guys" to re-think their strategies and offer better products for our money.
I hate to see 2000$ notebooks that sell for "gaming machines" and have crappy video cards, stock wireless and utterly bad screens. -
I use 150HM with 95% matte for everything; video editing, photo editing, 3D animation, sound recording. Works fine, don't even need a desktop.
v4 95% matte is the same screen Lenovo uses or used to use in W520 laptops
I think it was actually designed specifically for Lenovo.
You want 17", so no 95% matte, only 90% glossy if you can get it, but since resolution is the same as the 15" screen there isn't much reason to buy a bigger laptop. If it were 1920 x 1200 then yes. -
@bob1man:
Yeah, I dont mind supporting whoever gives me the best laptop for the price. As long as I get what I need/want
I am quite brand agnostic and prefer to get things that are not only good value but also very well built that would leave me to do my work and not tinker or phone support. And from what I read it seems Clevo laptops have that.
@Poskok:
Thanks. I have no idea if any of the German or other EU retailers stock the 95% gamut screen. I need to check, but from my first look at Schenker it was not available.
I only want 17 inch to watch movies with (Although thats not so often as I would like). The 15 should do it well enough (compared to my current 13 inch...hehehe). -
Only the resellers in England have screen upgrade options
And its more expensive for me to order from them.
So I like dealing with german resellers, the prices I get there are cheaper. Service is perfect!
Trust me, even with stock screen, you will LOVE it.
Ive never owned a laptop so good as this, the movies have vibrant colors and black is black, white is white! No more ghosting gray instead of pure black, no more mushy colors.
Wherever you choose to order from, just make sure you pick a configuration with AMD 7970m video card in it. Best value and best performance this year! (at least before 7990m comes out) -
-
Yes. Deviltech is not a good option to buy a 1500+ EUR notebook from.
It will take them quite a bit of time to process your order and you will have to keep mailing and posting in their forums to only HOPE for an ETA on when your laptop will be arriving.
Also, repairs take ages to do in Deviltech. If for some reason something goes wrong, dont hope for a swift resolution. Its a pain really...Ive been on their forums and Ive never seen so many complaints in one place.
MySN and NEXOC have full stock of parts, they got competent people working for them and doing the repairs, they have good support overall. -
No need to waste money on an upgrade that will only be detrimental for the performance he needs.
I'd personally get the 3720qm and 660m with an SSD, if I were OP.
EDIT: You might want to have a look at the W170 as well.

AMD's card has DirectCompute too! GPU can be used to encode stuff instead of the CPU.

Guys,
Thanks for the comments and discussions! Very helpful. I just mentioned Deviltech as their price was not bad and I found them in the Clevo retailers list here. I actually emailed Deviltech, Nexoc and Schenker about the screen. But only Nexoc and Schenker came back to me within a day. So for sure Deviltech are not on my business list.
Bob1man, I hear what you are saying, but with the German distributers so far I have not seen any offering an AMD card for now. Also as oan001 says, Nvidia is maybe nicer as the Cuda cores can be utilized by some Adobe and other editing software.
Is the W170 the workstation model?
My initial configuration was something like:
170EM with matte screen
Intel 3610 (can be upgraded to 3720 if worth it)
8GB ram
128GB Crucial M4 SSD as boot/system/software
1TB Samsung Spinpoint m8 5400rpm or Seagate 750gb 7200rpm
Blu-ray writer
Nvidia GTX 670M 1.5GB
I found a test by notebookcheck.net where they still tested it with the 2nd generation Intel chips. The important part was, that the matte screen (Min Chi I think) gave really good sRGB coverage it seems. So if the screen model stays the same it would be great I guess. What you guys think?
I will have a look at the w170 model now... -
PS....also at Nexoc I foudn two machines that seemed good. A G724 (looks like the 170EM)
NEXOC - mobile systems
...
and a M726 which they dont say what its based on... (I asked). the latter being cheaper, but also has lower model video card (Nvidia GT650)
NEXOC - mobile systems -
look at http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/665936-hd-photos-my-nyx1712-p170em.html#
the picture is really nice!! -
My XMG p702 (Schenker) has AUO B173HW01 v5 matte screen when I choose matte option in my order. What a surprice...
Best screen I have ever seen in notebooks.. ever!!! -
Goldmax.cz i Czech/Slovak reseller (EUROCOM EU dealer) who offers 15.6" 95% NTSC Matte/Glossy or 17.3" 90%/72% NTSC Matte/Glossy, although they are very pricey and I had to ask for big discount. Its advantage for me because they are located not far from where I live.
