Hi -
I just received my new Eurocom/Clevo 8690 (470m/i7-740QM/4GB Ram/720p screen) and have some questions about benchmarking and optimizing.
Keep in mind, this is my first dedicated gaming laptop so I'm new to alot of this.![]()
I wanted to benchmark my new machine to see how it compared to some of the 470m benchamrks being posted here. However, after buying the $20 version of 3dmark Vantage, I found out my screen doesn't support 1280x1024 so I can only run the two main GPU tests which scores 7899 running at native 720p resolution. Is this still a valid benchmark for comparison?
And if not, are there other benchmarking tools I should be trying?
Also, that score seems a little low...are there some things (besides potentially overclocking) I should be tweaking to improve performance? I've never owned a Clevo so I'm not certain if there's some kind of power management/throttling that could be slowing things down out of the box.
Last question, can anyone point me to some good resources for overclocking the 470m it terms of tools and process?
Much appreciated!
Mike

Use and external monitor.
-
720P? Do you mean a 3D screen (768p)?
-
Sorry...mistyped - I meant 900p (1600x900).
AS to an external monitor, I might be able to do that in future but don't have a cable that can plug into my main 30" monitor. -
Anyone else who owns 470M cares to step in? -
There were 3 screen options originally, - 3D (768p), HD+ (900p) and FHD (1080p).
-
As to the 900p screen, Clevo still makes them but I had to order from Eurocom to get one since Sager doesn't offer them anymore (otherwise I might have coming looking for a Sager from Aikimox since you're not too far away (I'm in BC)). -
Yes, the CPU can seriously influence the score. Given your CPU, I would say your score is about right.
-
oh dude, you did the right thing, i really wanted a 1600 res, its all look really small in the 1920, but the damn sager took away that option thinking everyone want the HD !!! its alright to watch movies but to do anything else nooooo !!!! (atleast for me)
now when i change the resolution to 1600x900 the nvidia drive stretch the freakin screen and the screen is NOT as impressive as it was (no crisp image or WOW factor here T_T) and if i turn the stretching off , the screen become small in the middle and sorrunded by black bars from each side T_T.
has anyone figured somthing to do with that, or like a moding some .inf file to make the 1600x900 native ? or is it plain hardware stuff and i should live with it ? -

Why worry about benchmark scores so much?
Why are you in such a hurry to overclock the GPU?
As long as you are getting good performance in games without slow downs or stuttering then there is nothing to worry about. -
agree with LaptopNut very much, since this is a new laptop you should not OC it now cause it will probably decrease its life cycle bla bla bla, and for what ??2-3 fps ?? com'n really ??
my last laptop lived for 4 years and still kicking and havent seen OCing until it wasnt able to play the game at all then i started to use the OCing (it didnt help much tho)

Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
everyone has their reasons for doing something
and that must be respected, personally I overclock my new hardware one because
is fun and the other because I find the limitations and how far I can go with the same -

hmm.. to be honest i based my "assumbtion" on the general speak of tech people but as to why, is it really true etc...
i guess i will leave the stage to soviet sunrise
