    Hey all,
I have my D900C coming in the mail hopefully Tuesday morning and I was just wondering if you guys have any tips on what to do when I first install the OS. I am looking for any program that will keep my computer running fast and safe.
Things I already have on my list are:
    FireFox
    VLC/Winamp
    Adaware
AVG (I heard that AVG has a problem with Clevo so i was wondering if you guys knew a better firewall and free anti virus.)

But I was just wondering if you guys have any tips/tricks on things to do when you first boot up your new PC. I read the sticky on top of the page to configure my OS.
    Thanks.

Congrats on the new beast. :)

The programs that are a must (and free):
Firewall: Zone Alarm Free Version or Kerio Personal Firewall
Anti-Virus: avast! 4 Home Edition or AVG (only had an issue with Clevo M570U)
    Adware/Malware Removers: Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware
Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox 2 (w/ extensions: IEtab and Adblock)
Office Suite: OpenOffice (its the free alternative to MS Office 2003 Pro)
Media Player: Media Player Classic or VLC and/or WinAMP
Media Codecs: K-Lite Codec Pack, Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative (way better than installing the players, its the codecs that can play the video files on ANY media player).
DVD Backup software: RipIt4Me (requires to have DVD Decrypter and DVDShrink.. both are free)
    Image Viewer: IrfanView
File Archiver/Zip Utility: 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR (shareware though)

I second everything on Gophn list. I use or have used most of those programs(but i have more media players and extension to fit my needs. And definitely configure/customize your OS so that you get it more suited to you needs and to get to know it better if you are trying out a new OS.

Ok software is one thing... but TAKE CARE OF THE HARDWARE:

lemme give you my pre-requisites for owning a high-end notebook:

Remember these things to have your notebook be healthy for years:

    1) Battery: to maintain the longevity of any rechargeable battery
    - you must NEVER overcharge it [especially for long durations of time] by keeping it plugged into AC
    - when it reaches 100% you should unplug it and let it discharge to 5-15%, then plug it back to power
    - OR you can just charge it to 50%+ and remove the battery and store in cool place [remember to use it occasionally to charge and discharge it].

2.) Heat: to prevent a healthy notebook from overheating
    - ALWAYS use the notebook on a hard & flat surface
    - RECOMMENDED to be used on a notebook cooler... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000
    - (for Clevo's) ALWAYS use the Fan Speed Toggle (Fn+1 for the D900C) to switch all fans in the notebook to Max Speed (defaults at Auto Speed) when gaming and such.
    - check your fans underneath occasionally (at least once a month) for any dust clogs [clean them out with Q-tips and air cans/compressors]
    - ALWAYS monitor the temps (CPU, GPU, HDD, etc..) to watch for fluctuations, which would indicate overheating

By doing these simple things, your entire system will easily last for more than 3 years.

For the software, I have something to add.

DVDFAB HD Decryptor. It'll rip a movie in DVD9, then you can send it over to DVD Shrink to compress if you want to. Reason for it? DVD Shrink doesn't update anymore, and DVDFAB gets updated almost weekly, there's not a movie I can't rip with DVDFAB.

EDIT: Say I want to dock my laptop for a long period of time, it would be best to take the battery out right? And like you said, charge it to 50%?

DVDFAB works too... but I found that even though DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink do not have updates for themselves.... RipIt4Me (which still has updates) acts as the front-end to the other two programs and works perfectly for all movies to date... very cool.

If you plan on leaving it docked.... then I would recommend to do at least one charge cycle, discharge it to near empty, then charge it back up to 50%+ and remove it.

Then store it somewhere cool and dry (not the refrigerator).

I find this battery advice interesting. I've had battery problems in the past, and it seems as though the battery in my dad's notebook just died. The thing is, we like to use our batteries as UPS devices (essentially). If we just remove them and keep them in storage, they aren't doing us a lot of good.

What is the minimum you would recommend for the discharge/recharge cycle? Is a once a day discharge to 15% sufficient? Could we get away with less?

You are correct, I should add:

after removing and storing the partially charged battery, you should still use (by doing a couple of charge cycles) it occasionally (3-4 times a year).

then you would have a healthy battery. :D

    Got it ok, thanks.

Ok so first, charge the battery up to 100%, use it to 0%, charge it up to 50% and use it sparingly through out the year.

heck i ussually dishcharge my battery to 15% or less more than one time a day more than one time a week. Is this bad? Will my Battery blow up one day or is it just fine to disharge to 15% once a week and leave it plugged in for the rest?

Thats still better than doing nothing. :)

No, the battery wont blow up... it just slowly degrades (chemically) until the battery cannot hold a charge anymore.

I would just recommend unplug the notebook from AC power overnight and when not using the system... to help prevent overcharging.

The important thing is that you are aware of your battery's status. :)

I am glad to see that my "persuasions" for notebook care taking is rubbing off.

Most people arent and within months their batteries can even hold a charge more than 30mins.

It doesn't make it safer Midnight (unless I miss my guess!) Your just taking care to protect the way your battery remembers to store energy. I.e. after a bit they develop a memory...sort of....not like the old NiCad's but still.

Its safe to hot plug the AC power when the notebook is on.

I always recommend to NEVER plug directly into wall sockets...
rather ALWAYS try to use Surge Protectors or UPS's.

I would recommend to get HiJackThis, you can run a Scan Only, then copy and paste the results.

I can help you clean up your startup to free up resources.

Like the Xbox controller adapter does not really need the startup program, as well as the Java Jusched.

HiJackThis is much more efficient in telling you everything else in the startup.

dont worry HijackThis is a great utility because if there was a program that you want to bring to back to the startup menu... HiJackThis backups up all the shortcuts that get disabled.

    RED = remove these
BLUE = (optional) you can remove these if you want

Note: HiJackthis makes a backup of the shortcuts that you remove, so you can always bring it back when you want.

your system looks pretty clean. No real "need" to clean out the startup. So you can just check the ones that I noted and hit fix problems then they will be removed from the startup list.

Although... I would recommend to stay away from Norton Anti-Virus.. as well as their SystemWorks.

The Norton Anti-Virus has the following flaws:
    - it is a HUGE resource hogger for not doing that much
    - it is NOT FREE (you are better off getting Avast! or AVG)
    - it creates many problems when you try to remove it
    - not worth it.

Avast! 4 and AVG are 100% free and works well for what you pay.. nothing. :)

The only Anti-Virus that is good through Symantec/Norton is:
    - Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition
    - Norton Corporate Edition (same as the Symantec version... fewer options)

They are a one time purchase, no subscriptions, and UI is amazingly simple and low-resource hogging.

Too bad that these anti-viruses are not usually sold to consumers

i use norton 360. they say it is less of a system hogger heh. but yea i hope this is easy to remove once the year is out. Btw does my intel core 2 duo 2.13 ghz mean i have 4.16 all together? im sorry i dont understand these to well and i see some games require 2.8 ghz O_O

btw what kinds of problems do you mean when someone would try to remove it?

the old CPU clocks speeds are not accurate anymore in the current era of multi-cores.

and current dual core can out perform the old single-core Pentium 4's and Athlon XP/64's.

Hopefully Norton wont cause any problems for you.... but seriously.

Save yourself $50 a year by just getting Avast!.. its a very superior Anti-Virus for free.

i dont understand >_< i must be really slow lols. so basically the 2.13 ghz core 2 duo is not really 2.13? it can be a tad bit more? does it also mean that it really isnt just 4.16 all together but just two processors? When one gets tired the other takes over and then it goes to the first one when the second one gets tired? im just throwing it out there. still confused about what i wrote down.

there are SO MANY threads about this all over this forum.

pretty much the whole GHz/clock speeds/system requirements are thrown out the door.

The architectures have changed, the cache has changed, the power consumption has changed, and its no longer single core anymore.

So the easy answer, DO NOT worry about the CPU system requirements, they are for those with old single-core desktop CPU's.

    The long answer:
Clock speed is not the only thing which affects the performance of a cpu. The whole underlying architecture on which the cpu was designed matters the most followed by the amount of cache, clockspeed etc. Basically in lay man's terms a Core 2 Duo is capable of doing more work per clock than a Pentium 4/D. Thats why even at a lower clock speed it is capable of outperforming the P-D's.

ANY current dual core will run any program/game fine... the main bottleneck that one should worry about is the GPU... and maybe the RAM to a point.

The important thing about a Processing Unit (such as a CPU) is how many instructions are executed per second. Many factors including clock-speed, branch prediction, cache efficiency, and newer tricks I really know nothing about factor into how "fast" the CPU is.
