    Hello all,

I've been browsing this forum for some time, just registered myself today. I have ordered a new laptop. But I choose not to install an OS on it. I was planning to install Win xp 64bit on it as I not really like Vista. But reading for some people say that XP aint good? I could also install win7 on it just need to get it first ;)

It is not that XP is not good it is 64-Bit XP will likely give you headaches finding drivers. XP 64 is not widely supported.

Hi Snakedtx and welcome to nbr.
you can add whatever OS you want but it looks like nvidia are phasing out drivers for xp so if you have a nvidia graphics card then updating drivers in the future may be a problem.
ive never liked vista so cant wait for 7 to be released so i can put it on my
    m860tu.

where did you buy it from and what spec are you running?

You better learn to like Vista or Windows 7 because that are better than XP in every single way and much more supported.

Right now, Vista SP2 is flawless, I'd recommend that until Windows 7 works out any serious kinks that might still be in it after release.

I would honestly ask yourself why you don't like Vista x64 and make sure there is actually a legitimate reason.
Sure Windows 7 is better, but only marginally.

I just ordered an NP 8662 (m860tu) from xoticpc.com as well without an OS. Im going to put Windows 7 Pro x64 on it -- got it free through my school. I havent used windows 7 yet, but i hear great things about it. Vista Ultimate x64 worked great for me, so naturally 7 should be just as good or better.

I wonder if all of these people ordering new m860tu's were aware of the NP8690. Regarding the OS, the only one I can recommend is Windows 7 X64.

Yeah i just ordered an NP8662 because i don't need i7 or a 280gtx @ $600 more price-tag. Also im really not a big fan of the look of the NP8690. So the NP8662 made much more sense for me.

The difference is a slightly more powerful GPU, a better internal cooling design with the GPU and CPU now having their own separate fans as opposed to the current model that has one fan for both components.

The new mobile i7 will not be at a disadvantage in applications and games that are Dual Core Optimised and will work just as well with anything Quad optimised as well any single Core apps. With the current model you don't have this advantage.

Due to the separate fans for the CPU and the GPU, the upgrade options should now be a bit better as well as the over clocking potential.

Despite these improvements, I have no plans to upgrade and am extremely happy with my current M86TU. It will be a few years before I even think about an upgrade.

Installed windows 7 professional a week ago, and its awesome. Compared to vista its noticeable faster and more responsive even on my m570. It also has more window organization features, and I'm a ton more productive on it. I'd recommend windows 7 over anything else.
