    Hello,

I have a ~2010 StyleNote branded Clevo W880CU that has I7 740QM and GTX 470M and 8GB RAM in it. I would like to swap them to I7 940XM, 16GB RAM and some currently undetermined better GPU. However, I have been notified by fellow member @D2 Ultima that it might need new bios/vbios in order to work and should ask @Prema . Since I'm new here, I can't send PM's so I'll have ask this way.

    So, my questions are:
    1. Would it be possible to swap the GPU for a better one without flashing bios/vbios?
    2. If necessary, would it be possible to make new bios/vbios for this laptop?
    3. How much would it cost?

    Thanks in advance

I never said THIS notebook needs a new BIOS/vBIOS, I don't even know how compatible it is with later GPUs.

I re-read what you said and the tl:dr was
(before finding out what model it is): depending of the model it might work without new bios
(after finding out what model it is): a 2010 laptop, it won't work without new bios
EDIT: it was "if it is a Clevo, it needs new bios"
And i was basing it after that, that I will need a new bios.

I edited first post from "I need new bios" to "can I swap GPU without flash?"

Ahh... well that much is true. If you have a Clevo prior to the PxxxSM-A series, a new GPU installation that comes after the initial sale timeframe of your notebook requires a new sBIOS, at the minimum.

But it doesn't mean all Clevos *can* upgrade. For example the PxxxEM series could not use 700M or 800M cards at all; but 900M was possible (they sold with 600M). So people with the notebooks thought they didn't have an upgrade path for quite a bit.
