Hey guys, I'm new to this forum! :)
I own a Clevo x7200 for almost a year now, and have 1 SSD with 120 GB and 1 HDD with 750GB but only 5400rpm so far.

Sadly I had to discover that 5400 is far too slow to record in 720 or 1080p, so I want to buy a third HDD which should be as fast as possible. Can anyone suggest me one and where to buy? As well as the required thing to plug it into my Notebook? I have yet to fully read the "Adding Hardware" section in the manual, but I know that the HDD must be 2,5".

    Any help?

    welcome to nbr
i can recommend the western digital scorpio black 7200rpm but someone else will have to advise with the recording in 720 or 1080

alternately another ssd would be better of course but quite a bit more expensive.

How much do you want to spend? If money is no object, then a 512GB to 1TB SSD would be optimal.

I also thought about suggesting a couple of more drives, as the x7200 can hold up to four if you remove the optical drive, for a RAID configuration. However, when a WRITE operation uses more than the stripe size (which on the x7200 is 64K IIRC), a RAID 0 volume doesn't gain much. (Dunno how RAID 5 would work in your scenario.)

Assuming price is an issue for the large SSD, the WD Scorpio Black would be my next suggestion, but only because I think you'll be using the drive for "WRITES" more than "READS". For a drive that will be treated more for "READS", the Seagate Momentus XT would be my next suggestion.

Thanks for the quick responses! :D
Yes money is indeed an issue, I'm looking to spend ~100 - 150€, so no 1 TB SSD :)
I looked the WD Scorpio Black up, it pretty beats any other HDD's in the tests... however the best 7200rpm I found has 750GB, so I assume going anything higher only allows 5400rpm in 2,5" drives?

Other than that the Scorpio Black looks very good to me!

ADK seems to suggest SEAGATE 7200rpm drives. According to tomshardware the WD Scorpio is slightly better, though.
Anyone here who records his gameplay and has some other HDD's to suggest? Otherwise I'd go with the 750GB 7200rpm Scorpio from WD :D

OP, what write speed are you currently getting? How fast do you need to be able to write? What quantity of data will you be writing at one time?

On the 5400rpm HDD where I tried recording at Dxtory benchmarks me ~70-75mb/sec, though its very inconsistent. I'm not sure what speed I am required to write, but I'm quite confident a 7200rpm drive should be fast enough!

Too bad, I'm not. In order to record uncompressed 1080p, you want 4 7200RPM drives in raid0 or you risk suffering lost frames. If you want to compress it, or do uncompressed 720p, 2 7200RPM drives should be enough. Maybe. Some SSD's aren't even fast enough. Also, how do you plan to record your gameplay?

Dxtory, Lagarith Codec, 720p or 1080p, 60 FPS, 6 Cores w/ Multi GPU fix code (for some reason it doesn't change anything performance related when I check this box currently)

Ok, I just checked the Dxtory site. Terrible english even by internet standards and no useful info. Bah. Anyway, what I was looking for is numbers on how fast your write speeds need to be to record 1080p, nothing. You should ask around in the software and graphics cards section of NBR and see if you can get any numbers, then you know how many HDD's you need.

Yeah the translation sucks, but the code is awesome. What do you use for recording?

Nothing yet, because my old computer is too wimpy to play games, let alone record while playing. Because I mostly play Super Smash Bros, and occasionally Paper Mario and some Zelda games, I just game on consoles. Once I get my P150EM, I'm hoping to get one of these, though: Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle. It's the same price as all of the PVR's you see lying around, but should I need to it can record up to uncompressed 1080p. I'm getting 2x750GB RAID0, so I'll see how high I can go without dropped frames. If I can record uncompressed 480p I'll be happy.

Having a computer that can record is one of the reasons I'm upgrading, I have tons of epic SSB stunts I want to record, and will be also attempting some speedruns of said games.
