So i now have a single 128GB samsung ssd Inside my x7200 and its time to fill the other 2 empty spaces.
I dont want speed, but i want capacity.
So what i'm looking at is 1TB hdd.
I think inside the case will fit also 12.5mm hdd, but now we have 1Tb 9.5hdd also.
So besides the 1Tb 12.5mm WD hard drive, the 9.5mm option that i'm looking at are:
1)Western Digital WD10JPVT, 101.85 EUR at amazon.de
2)Samsung HN-M101MBB, 84.89 EUR at amazon.de
Question, what to choose.
I'd normally go with the samsung model, as it is cheaper, and it will go just fine with the samsung ssd that i allready have (just a psychic justification, nothing more), but why is the samsung model 15 euro cheaper ?
Is it worth paying 15 euros more for the WD model ? Or is just the brand that is worth more:
Western DIgital WD10JPVT:
Read/Write 1.4 Watts
Idle 0.59 Watts
Standby 0.18 Watts
Sleep 0.18 Watts
Rotational Speed 5,400 RPM (nominal)
Buffer Size 8 MB
Average Latency 5.50 ms (nominal)
Samsung HN-M101MBB
Read/Write (typical) 2.2 W
Idle (typical) 0.7 W
Standby (typical) 0.2 W
Sleep (typical) 0.2 W
Rotational Speed 5,400 RPM (nominal)
Buffer Size 8 MB
Average Latency 5.60 ms (nominal)
It seems to me the samsung model might use more power. Im not interested in comparing transfer speeds for a storage hdd. I'm sure whatever speeds they might have, is more than enough, as i plan to use it sollely for storage. I have the ssd drive for speed.
What i'm interested in is reliability. I would pay 15 euros more for a more reliable and resilient hdd.
But i know of a fact. My wife has a lenove atom notebook with a 160gb western digital scropio blue hdd which has developed a problem. When the pc starts there is a big bad roaring sound, like the platter is hitting something, then it stops before it enters windows. It might be that i just got a bad 160hdd, it might be the hdd is of the eraly models. It might be that i was just unlucky, It could be a lot of things. I know i can't judge an entire line of products, by a small localized event, but this is one of a problems i know of i had with the western digital scropio blue brand.
I also have in a Hewlett Packard Laptop a 640gb WD blue hdd which seems to work just fine.
If you know any more info about the 2 hdd, let me know. FOr now i would go with the cheaper samsung model.
I'm curious though why the WD model costs more.

Here in the US many forum members get extra hard drives and such from Newegg. They always have a section for user reviews that is helpful in making a decision which to purchase.
See the two drives you mentioned below. Both should serve you well.
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

These 5400 rpm drives are as fast as the older generation 7200 rpm drives because of increased platter density (the increase and decrease almost match making it on par)
surprisingly, they're both standard height so they fit in everything (that's cause they only use 2 platter thanks to the super platter density)
I'm using the samsung 1tb right now, can't say whether it is better and worse than the WD.
Opinion: They're probably both good, I know I'm happy with the samsung that's been there a few months -
I would go with a WD Scorpio black if you can find one. The price difference between the blue and black drives is primarily the warranty and rpm. Blues generally run at 5400rpm and blacks run at 7200rpm. Also, the black drives come with a 5 year warranty instead of a 3 year. The only catch is that you must register the drives within 30 days of purchasing them. I haven't had any experience with Samsung, but I can vouch for Seagate. I've been running them inside my desktop and have had no issues so far.

Another vouch for seagate. Only brand I've used besides Hitachi, which failed. But I'm sure both you listed will work grand.

good news
but i decide to wait wd scorpio black 1tb 7200rpm one -
I'm choosing between the highest capacity laptop drives.
I've heard there is a seagate constellation hdd, a 2.5" built for server racks, which is a bit thicker than 12.5 or so.
And this is available in sas and sata 6.
But its almost double the price. And double the power consumption. Or somtn. -
